New Tools/Docs: T3D MAXScript
Vying for a little good community karma, EALA Technical Art Director Kyle 'Sgt Fury' McKisic has released some good stuff for us: the T3D MAXScript tool and user guide. This tool allows importing and exporting Unreal's T3D format between UnrealEd and 3DS Max, for level geometry (especially useful for Undying's terrain feature). Here's a bit from the readme:
We used this tool during development of Clive Barker's Undying to import and export t3d files from the UndEd editor to 3ds Max and back again.

It works with Max 3.1 - and most likely works with Max 4.x (there aren't any reasons it shouldn't). We used Max 3.1 during development, so it was developed for and works there.

New Map: The New Beginning
It is the voice first heard that is often the loudest. Though sibilant to the ear, there can be no mistaking th e roar that hammers the mind. Witness a new world, entitled The New Beginning that tears through our consciousness thanks to these whispers from Jon 'Cabela' Hunt.

Patrick decides to stay on at the manor after defeating everyone in Undying. All is calm and peaceful, or is it.....

Note that the last map in this pack has a bug, so download a fixed version of this one map here.

Cutscene tutorial
A helping hand, though bruised and incomplete, has reached from the darkness to provide succor to those seeking to expand their arcane knowledge. Take it, and be led to Holo's cutscene tutorial... if you dare.

Images from upcoming map
All men know the future; it is just a matter of looking. To this end you can sometimes slip, and allow consciousness to soften and let in the light of forward days. This direction holds one possibility, of darkness and fear and Gibdo & The Crazy German's Family Grave.

Reanimation
Those of us who serve many masters inhabit a prison unique in design. There may not be walls or chains, but the shackles exist nonetheless. Recent past has seen me tormented by duty, bludgeoned by weakness, and faced with a perilous mountain of responsibility. For now I am free, and returned.

The Trsanti Lair
Of splintered bone and fractured soul
Of moans that well from depthless hole
the cries that puncture, necks that snap
fear nightmare wrought by brand new map

After being washed up on a beach after your visit to the Covenant Estate, you stumble across an entrance to the Trsanti Lair. Hearing of stories in the past of great riches and such, you decide you want to look into it further. Your only obstacle is the Trsanti themselves, who dont take too nicely to anyone stealing their property...

Encouragment from EALA
The voice has no source, but it thunders just the same. Cower in fear and amazement, eyes averted, as the words from one of The Creators of Undying punches through your being...

To all involved and around Standing Stones -

First off, I think I speak for the entire CBU team in saying that we are tremendously surprised, shocked and happy that you guys have continued your exploration and experimentation with Undying. If we had it our way, we'd be far and away working on future (warped) versions of Undying, but alas....

I think at a ground level we all wanted something that not only we would want to play, build, destroy and rebuild but we knew that the mod community - YOU GUYS - would as well. So you know, the team is pretty fragmented amongst other teams right now with their heads to the grindstones on other projects, but it does give us all great pleasure to see that you all are *still* grinding out maps and having a blast. Keep up the fun and be safe in these trying days!

I've got one more trick up my sleeve and I will talk to the guys running Standing Stones about another possible contest that will translate into something very cool for the winner!!! Stay tuned!

Vengeance released
Update The map below is missing a few elements, so hold off on downloading until we can get a fixed version.

The time has come... feel the clenched fists, the slitted eyes, the bared teeth of Hannamay's Vengeance. This new community Undying map is 253 KB.

New Undying Realms images
Undying Realms admin ArcAngel has taken up the hammer and chisel, and henceforth will be providing updates to the Undying Realms site. He's chipped away two new updates recently, one of which points towards new screenshots of their Undying remake of Realms of the Haunting.

One more Hannamay image
Whether by gush or gout or trickle, we still long to feed on what the Undying community mappers bleed. Here is one more drop, taken from Hannamay's upcoming "Vengeance."

Upcoming map screens from Holo
It's an exciting thing when a new mage feels the thrill of demonic energy rush through their form, after completing their first successful summons. You can almost taste Holo's anticipation, as the day fast approaches for her. Below is a description of what form this incantation will take...
Patrick has been contacted by Dr Miles Herrington, PhD, an eccentric and wealthy archaeologist and anthropologist, renowned world-wide traveller and collector of rare artifacts. Patrick is familiar with the doctor's publishings, especially his work on both ancient and modern mysticism and magic. Dr Herrington has asked Patrick to investigate a series of strange manifestations which have appeared in his house, triggering a host of unnatural and disturbing events. However, things are not quite as straightforward as they first seem.

Undying score up for BAFTA
The soundtrack to Covenant madness has apparently been heard far and wide, as the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) have nominated Undying's music for a 2001 Interactive Entertainment award. This is an award of tremendous prestige, similar to America's Academy Award (Oscar).

Acidtrance's Acidparis images
From famine to feast to famine to feast, thus is the life of a member of the Undying community. But the stone does not lie, and shows us images of future meals... first up is this page of screenshots from a map being worked on by acidtrance.

Upcoming map screens from Hannamay
A familiar coppery taste washes across the senses again, the first hint of another user map in the making. Forum participant hannamay sent along a description and two images from her work, so enjoy:
I have come close to completing my first map. It is called "Vengeance" and it revolves around the Covenant Manor. Patrick has returned to the Covenant Manor to find the ex-Covenant children still haunting the Manor.

New Undying Wallpaper
Macintosh users rejoice, as you are not alone. Brad, from InsideMacGames.com, sent along news of an Undying wallpaper he has created. View the page, where the file can be downloaded in nine different resolutions.

Standing Stones Chat Channel
Come, gather like a pack of green Howlers around a pile of red meat, and discuss all things relevant to those who live and breathe this game. The chat room is now open, both to those with irc client access, and those who just want to click a link.

New Screens from Blu3funk
With ever-increasing ferocity, Blu3funk continues to map his way into an abyss of madness.. first there was TIundying1, then Lunacy, and soon there will be the Hellraiser map pack.

News Archived
Like the piles of corpses from the magical cataclysm that tore Oneiros apart, we've dumped the collected news items of the past into a pit filled with lime for interment. There they'll remain.

Contest Winners
Congratulations to everyone who submitted maps to the editing contest, each and every one of them surpassed my expectations as to user created single player maps. Picking the winners ended up being an EXTREMELY hard task, which is why the announcement was delayed. Without further ado I present the winners, which (along with the other entrants) can all be downloaded and played here:

Grand Prize Winner - Corrupted by Benjamin "Hobbes" Hardin
At the very core, above and beyond all the extra tricks included courtesy of the kickass Undying engine and Hobbes' talent, Corrupted just plain got the FPS basics right. The combat was nicely balanced, evenly spaced, and included an excellent selection of the Undying menagerie. Additionally, there was a nice assortment of inventory items and weapons available, with an added bonus of some of the unused-in-the-retail spells like Ward and Mindshatter. Kinda cool that you started off with these, instead of picking up spell scrolls. To top things off, the architecture was all definitely nice to look at.

Corrupted also had a great little story, who's implementation showed that Hobbes had really mastered some of the trickier technical parts of Undying editing. Journal entries, scripted stuff, traps, scrye events, and a nice amount of polish made this map the overall winner.

Second Place - The Storm Breaks by EddX
Without a doubt this map handed out the architecture beatings like no other... the only thing better than the breathtaking interiors was the mindblowing exterior street section. I spent plenty of time just walking around and looking at all the buildings (and I definitely noticed the nice touch of building facades outside of the playing area, which made the map seem more 'real'). The story never really factored in much, I'm sure because this map will eventually be a part of a map pack that takes the story farther. But the puzzle elements were there, with clearly defined tasks that were in some cases marked with some pretty fancy editing work. That fancy editing factored in many times, from the great opening cutscene with Patrick writhing on the bed to the final entrance into the underground.

The journal entries, scrye events, and so much more made this a technical masterpiece. Slightly more varied monsters would have put Corrupted in jeapordy as the top submission.

Third Place - Hartly Mansion by Paul C Roberts 'Osiris'
Intricate interiors, a very believable sense of place, and an interesting progression of events put Hartly Mansion firmly in third place. Osiris is another one of the entrants who showed that he's not afraid of the tricks that Undying has to offer... I mean, for gosh sakes you get to see blood splash up on the walls, and the butler catches on fire! Seriously, this map is great looking inside and out, and filled with plenty of interesting events (although some of them don't seem to have much to do with anything). Impressive things include the lightning through the window that starts a fire which eventually burns the place down, some creepy scrye events, and the little secret tunnel that opens if you press the button in the casket. All this map needed was a little bit of polish and a bit more 'purpose' to some of the things that occured.

Honorable Mention - Lunacy by Bluefunk
While not quite as cohesive or balanced as the maps above, Lunacy still deserves a place on this list. Bluefunk's one-week submission is a testament to his skill and focus. This map has an excellent interior design which winds you through the creepy asylum, some great scripted stuff, and a freaky little electrical torture room which unsettles even this intrepid FPS junkie :) Since this map didn't quite make the top three, but is still very impressive, Bluefunk will be getting a little piece of Undying history courtesy of EALA as a runner-up prize.
