Playable Characters
Mario
This famed plumber has almost all of his signature moves from Super Mario Bros (NES), including his fireball (B button). When his jumping uppercut (UP + B) connects with an opponent, the attact resonates with the familiar coin sound. When Mario taunts, he doubles in size as if he has eaten a super mushroom. Mario enters each match through a green pipe.
Luigi
Luigi has very similar signature moves as his brother, Mario, but with slight differences: Luigi's fireball is green instead of red; his jumping uppercut does not chain like Mario's (but you still hear the coin sound); and Luigi performs a different taunt. Like Mario, Luigi enters each match through a green pipe.
Yoshi
Yoshi has several signature moves that either involve an egg or his mouth (good `ol Yoshi): he can throw an egg at his opponent (egg throw, UP + B); he can throw an opponent out of his mouth (grab with Z button); he can ingest an opponent and encase them in an egg (B button); or he can block by enclosing himself in an egg (L or R button). Yoshi enters each match by hatching out of an egg.
Non-Playable Characters
Metal Mario
Metal Mario is one of the last enemies before Master Hand; he is not a playable character. Metal Mario has the exact moveset as Mario, but his metallic composition makes him a strong and heavy foe. He first appeared in Super Mario 64 (N64) as a power-up that allowed Mario to walk underwater.
Costumes
Fiery Mario
The maroon and cream color scheme is based on Foreman Spike's costume from the game Wrecking Crew (NES) and NOT the Fiery Mario costume from Super Mario Bros (NES).
Wario Imposter
The purple and yellow color scheme is based on Wario's outfit, who first appeared in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins (GB). However, the earliest colored image I have seen with Wario in his purple and yellow outfit is on the box cover of Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 (GB).
Fiery Luigi
The color arrangement of this costume is similar to the one Luigi wore in Super Mario World (SNES). Luigi wore the costume after receiving a fire flower, which consequently gave him the ability to shoot fireballs.
Red, Blue, and Yellow Yoshi
In Super Mario World (SNES), there are three additional playable Yoshi - Red, Blue, and Yellow - that have special abilities. Red Yoshi always spits out fire balls, whatever the color of the shells in his mouth. Blue Yoshi can fly for a fixed length of time, whatever the color of the shells in his mouth. Yellow Yoshi throws out sand clouds for a fixed length of time when he jumps, whatever the color of the shells in his mouth.
Items
Bob-omb
Seen as early as Super Mario Bros 3 (NES), these creatures would explode shortly after being stimulated.
Fire Flower
After Mario received a fire flower, he transformed to Fiery Mario and had the ability to shoot fireballs.
Green Shell
These shells were left behind Green Koopa Troopas/Paratroopas after Mario had bounced on their heads. Be careful, though, since the Koopa Troopas/Paratroopas had simply hid in their shells and would momentarily return.
Red Shell
Same as Green Shells, except they came from Red Koopa Troopas/Paratroopas.
Starman
Acquiring the Starman gives Mario temporary invincibility.
Stages
Castle Peach
Princess Peach's magnificent royal castle appears to be inhabited solely by the princess and a multitude of Toads. Bowser tried to steal the castle's Power Stars in Super Mario 64, and in Paper Mario, the surly archfiend actually lifted the castle into the stratosphere with his own filthy fortress.
» Appearances
Lakitu - In Super Mario Bros (NES), Lakitu would toss enemies at Mario. In Super Mario 64 (N64), Lakitu acted as the camera-man.
Princess Peach Castle - In the background of this stage, you can see Princess Peach's Castle as featured in Super Mario 64 (N64). Furthermore, the castle's original form was featured as a battle arena in Smash Bros Melee (GC).
Yoshi's Island
The land were Yoshi's of all size and color live.
» Appearances
Goonie - This bird appeared in both Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Story.
Shy Guy - This creature originally appeared in Super Mario Bros 2, where it hindered Mario's progress. In Smash Bros Melee, these guys usually bring helpful items to the fight.
Mushroom Kingdom
Mushroom Kingdom is the domain Princess Peach rules from her castle. The Smash Bros stage contains many item and enemy appearances featured in the original Super Mario Bros (NES) game.
» Appearances
Bullet Bill - cannon shoots out bullets towards Mario
Buzzy Beetle - This creature is indestructible to everything except when Mario has a Starman. Like the Koopa Troopas, this creature will hide in its shell if Mario stomps on its head.
Cloud - Mario used this floating structures for support in the air.
Boss Dungeon - Mario fought against a Koopa in each of these dungeons at the end of each world.
Flag - Found at the end of each level (except for dungeons), Mario earn a variable amount of points proportional to the height at which he touched the flagpole.
Green Koopa Troopa - Mario encountered these turtle-like creatures all over his adventures. To make it hide in its shell, stomp on the Koopa Troopa's head.
POW block - This item was in Super Mario Bros 2 (NES). Hitting the pow block defeats all the enemies on the screen.
Pulley - used as platforms for Mario to move through a level. However, don't stand on any one for too long or else you will fall to your doom.
Pipe/Red Piranha Plant - Some pipes are guarded by Piranha plants. Simply wait until the plant is in the pipe to proceed.
Springboard - use this to jump to higher areas.
Vine - use to climb to higher areas.
Music
Castle Peach Music 5 in Sound Test
Heard in the stage Castle Peach, this song is a remix to the original Super Mario Bros (NES) theme.
Yoshi's Island Music 9 in Sound Test
The only game I have found this song is in Yoshi's Story (N64), but it could be in Yoshi's Island (SNES) as well.
Mushroom Kingdom Music 13 in Sound Test
This is the original Super Mario Bros (NES) song heard in the stage Mushroom Kingdom.
Mushroom Kingdom Music 14 in Sound Test
This song was heard in Super Mario Bros (NES) when you had less than a minute left to finish the level. In Smash Bros, this song appears in Mushroom Kingdom when you have 30 seconds left in the match (in VS Mode AND Time mode, only).
Hammer Music 26 in Sound Test
This tune is played when someone is using the hammer; from the original Donkey Kong arcade game.
Starman Music 27 in Sound Test
This tune is played when someone has the Starman; from the original Super Mario Bros (NES) game.
Mario voices Voices 1-11 in Sound Test
Most of Mario's voices were also heard in Super Mario 64 (N64). The most notable voices are "Yaa-hoo!" (Voice 4) and "Here we go!" (Voice 11).
Yoshi voices Voices 33-46 in Sound Test
Yoshi's most notable voice is simply "Yoshi!" (Voices 33, 44, or 46).
Luigi voices Voices 93-104 in Sound Test
Luigi's voices are mostly identical to Mario's. The most notable voices are "Yaa-hoo!" (Voice 96) and "Here we go!" (Voice 104).
