At The Gates
by: Tech21 | December 14, 2002

[Jump to: Tracking Hayamoto | Hidden Valley | At The Gates | Shogun Showdown]

The mission briefing for At The Gates is exactly the same as Hidden Valley. This time, however, 47 must disable a series of power grids to shut off security and gain entrance to Hayamoto's castle. Unfortunately, until you make it inside the castle, the ID-check system is still in effect, so 47 will be avoiding confrontation once again. But there's good news: unlike in Hidden Valley, a disguise on this mission will fool the snipers, so there's no worrying about dodging bullets from above.

Load-Out

Once again, all equipment is carried over from the previous mission. This includes starting gear: fiber wire, anesthetic, 9mm silenced pistol, and Ballers, as well as the SMG, kitchen knife, and silenced Ballers from Hayamoto Jr.'s estate, and of course the crossbow and night vision available at the drop-point. Keep in mind: it's important that the crossbow is carried over from Hidden Valley with sufficient ammunition.

Walkthrough

You begin the mission at the other side of the secret passage discovered at the end of Hidden Valley. Checking the map, you'll see a winding valley leading to Hayamoto's castle. There are two guards patrolling the higher ridgeline along the south, and three patrolling the pathway to the castle. 47 will be avoiding the path and taking the higher ground to the south, of course, so it's time for a little crossbow action. Hang out at the starting point for about a minute or so, waiting for the nearest ridgeline guard to get as close to your position as he does before turning around and heading back the other way. Drop him with the crossbow.

Now run southwest up onto the ridge to retrieve your prize. Drag his body over against the mountainside and change into his clothes. Now run south and then east directly against the mountainside as to stay out of sight of the guards patrolling the path below. Soon, the second ridgeline patroller will come into view. Get close enough to take him down with the crossbow, while staying far enough out of his sight. Once he is dead, continue in the same direction. Don't worry about moving the body.

As you get closer to the castle, Diana will inform you of the location of two power grids, which are conveniently marked on your map. You'll notice the first of these is directly ahead, on the east side of the castle. As you top the small hill leading to the marked map location, take note of the guard keeping watch over the power grid. Make sure he is walking away from you as you top the hill, or else he'll come running to check your ID. Run and crouch behind the nearest boulder. Again, as he is walking away from your position, drop him with a headshot from the crossbow.

Run over and enter the fenced area, turning off the power grid. Diana will now inform you that there is at least one more unit, which from the map you'll see is located inside the castle grounds. Run back south, dropping off the ledge and then head west to the main castle entrance. As you approach the entrance, stop and wait for the patrolling guard to pass west (left) across the doorway. Now run up the remainder of the hill and enter the castle.

[Save Game]

Make an immediate right through the wooden door, and head up the stairs. Now, as you approach the top of the stairs, enter sneak mode and carefully walk across the hall, making sure the snipers positioned down the hall don't notice you (the ninjas in the rafters don't care). Exit out the door at the top the stairs, and then turn to your right and you'll see the second power unit. Run over and turn it off, and Diana will then inform you of a third power unit - unfortunately the location is unknown.

Now run and hide behind the nearest snowdrift, keeping an eye on the door from which you exited. After you see the patrolling guard come out, then head back inside, make your way up the long ramp directly to your north. Enter the door at the top of the ramp and then head west down the hallway. You'll eventually come upon the third and final power unit.

After disabling the third unit, all that's left is to find your way to the exit point (which oddly happens to the entrance to the castle interior). There are four doors along the hallway you are currently in which all exit out into the same courtyard. You'll want to exit out the door closest to the power unit. Check the map to make sure the single guard patrolling the courtyard is walking east, away from you. Exit through the door and run north and then west up the ramp. Once up on the landing, pass through the newly security-ridden doorway, up the stairs, and into the castle. Watch out Hayamoto - here comes 47!

The back entrance may not be the best entrance.

The other back entrance, however, is a different story...
