Pokémon
Bigger Snorlax
Items a Pokémon with Snorlax
Location a large stage is recommended
This trick works when you get a Snorlax from a Poké Ball. When you get a Snorlax, quickly move to the edge of the screen. What you want to do is make the stage look as small as possible. That way, when Snorlax comes down, he'll occupy a larger area when coming down. You can do this wherever, but as you can see, bigger stages work better.
Characters
Extended Ledge Reaching
Characters Samus Aran, Link, Young Link
Location almost anywhere with a long, vertical solid wall
As you may know, Samus, Link, and Young Link have extended grabbing capabilities (with the help of hookshots and grapling beam). However, enemies aren't the only things they can grab on to. In levels with a solid ledges (like the front of the Great Fox at Corneria), if you manage to correctly press and hold the grab button () in the air, relatively close to the ledge, the characters will grab on to the ledge (either with the hookshot or grapling beam). You need to hold on to the button, else you'll grab on but fall off. Once you have a hold of the ledge, you'll go down the length of the hookshot or grapling beam; press the button to be hauled in by your grabbing item. This trick takes a lot of practice to do correctly, so good luck.
Blocking with the Heroes of Time
Characters Link, Young Link
With either Link or Young Link you can block most projectile attacks with your shield while you are standing still or ducking.
Deadly Assassin
Characters Sheik
I have found that when you use Sheik's button attack (Needle Storm) you can move while holding them. Press and hold , when you stop hearing the sound of her collecting needles tap the or button. This will alow you to hold the needles while moving and fighting freely. Press the button again and she will throw the needles. (You know you have done it right if you see her glowing while she moves.)

Glowing Hand
Characters Mewtwo
You probably know this but you can move around while using Mewtwo's button attack (Shadow Ball). Press and hold , when the energy ball stops growing push the joystick or . Mewtwo will move and one hand should glow purple (looks like it is on fire).

Basic Techniques
Grabbing in Mid Air
A new trick in SSBM, you can actually grab items in the air. Simple press or when you are above the item.

To catch an item thrown at you, press right before the item makes contact. Another method is to press either or and immediately follow with .

The best way I've found to practice this technique is to use Peach. Take out her vegetable, throw it up into the air, and jump after it, catching it in mid air. It may be easier than you think.

Wall Jumping
Characters Samus Aran, Fox McCloud, Falco Lombardi, Captain Falcon
Location almost anywhere with a long, vertical solid wall
The wall jump allows you to kick yourself up from a wall without using any of your jumps. In order to practice this trick, go to a stage with a solid vertical wall (Mushroom Kingdom {the two holes on the ground}, Hyrule Temple {the middle ledge}, Young Link's Target Test). Here are the steps to perform a wall jump:
  • jump toward a wall
  • as soon as you make contact with the wall, tilt your joystick in the opposite direction you jumped in
For instance, look at the picture to the right. As you can see, Fox first jumped to the right, then pressed his joystick to the left. This may take a little practice but once you get the hang of it, life becomes a lot easier (well, not really).
Advanced Techniques
Wavedashing
I. Tutorial
A. What is wavedashing?
Wavedashing is an advanced technique in SSBM that appears to make your character slide forwards or backwards. In reality, your character is air-dodging forwards or backwards. This is a very effective technique that sets your character up for attacks, grabs, or combos.
B. How to do the wavedash?
There are two popular methods in performing this technique (please note there is a subtle timing difference for each character):
1. (prefered method) with your joystick, hold down and tilt slightly to the left or right (to go forwards or backwards, respectively), then continue with the following button combination executed in quick successions after another: X ~ R ~ ... ~ *attack, grab, or combo*
2. jump with your character (short jump recommended), then immediately follow with down-left/right + R
While there are minor differences in move order and execution, both are essentially a product of your character jumping then air-dodging so close to the ground that it makes your character appear to slide.

II. Uses
As mentioned before, wavedashing is highly versitile as it prepares your character for practically anything.
A. Movement
For some characters, wavedashing can be a quicker way of running/dashing towards your opponent.
B. Evasion
Instead of rolling or jumping backwards, wavedashing away from your opponents is a far more effective method. Not only do you create space with your enemy, but you give yourself the opportunity to punish your foe if he rushes recklessly. In addition, wavedashing is great at avoiding projectiles, such as Samus's missile. Use wavedashing to approach your missile-frenzy opponent to increase your probability of evasion.
C. Offense
Rather than dashing and attacking, wavedashing will advance you closer to your opponent and allow you to follow up with attacks (any type, including smash), grabs (most useful), or combos (initiates many combos, such as Fox's Shine Combo).

III. Variations
A. Wavefall
Wavefall is the self-induced version of getting hit with a shield while close to the edge and falling down on a lower platform on your back. The way to perform this move is to wavedash on a platform and then raise your shield before you fall from the edge. Again, since this move is a "corollary" to the wavedash, there are timing variations for each character; rule of thumb: characters with good wavedashes are more suited to wavefalling.

IV. Character Details
Basically, the best wavedashers are those that have a good combination of low traction and long slide length, such as Luigi, Marth, Mewtwo, and Ice Climbers (written in no particular order with Luigi as the best).
Shield Reflecting
This trick allows any character to reflect back a projectile shot at them. However, this trick is very hard to perform. To practice this trick, I would first recommend the following:
  • two controllers
  • Special Melee: Slow Motion
  • Characters: Fox + Mario
  • Stage: Final Destination
(I'm going to assume you guys did what I said above, in the lists)
When you enter the stage, move both characters to the end of the stages. Next, with Fox activate his blaster with one of your hands (or let someone else do it) and press the or with Mario. Now here's the tricky part. You need to activate the shield ( or ) right before it hits you. If you did it right, it should reflect right back at Fox. If not, you'll either:
  • get hit with the shot (if you did this, you were too slow)
  • block the shot normally (if you did this, you were too fast)
  • or block the shot with a big shield (if you did this, you were close)
