Muse's original 1981 Castle Wolfenstein for the C-64 & Atari 8-bit.  It was the inspiration for id's 1992 Intel-based release, Wolfenstein 3d.

The Commodore 64 was THE computer game platform of the mid-80's.  Apple and Atari ruled the early 80's, and the C-64 couldn't match the power of the late 80's systems (although C-64 game sales remained strong).  However, circa 1984-87 was the C-64's sweet spot in gaming history.

There are very few significant PC games that weren't either specifically targeted for the C-64 or made available soon after their initial release.  Publishers were eager to take advantage of the platform's huge user base.  Many of today's publishers became household names because of their work on the C-64 ... including Electronic Arts, who published on many platforms at the time but none so prolifically as the C-64.
