VIC-20 Pac-Man. Atari had no problem producing
software for competing systems.
The VIC-20 was Commodore's first entry into the mainstream home market. Even
though it was seriously under-powered, its low price made it a great "starter"
computer, which meant games were a natural fit. It had a relatively short-lived
heyday between its release in 1981 and the release of its successor, the C-64, in 1982. (The VIC-20 was produced and sold even after
the release of the C-64). Still, a huge number of games
were released for the system: nearly 200 cartridges, far more cassette based games,
and even some games on floppy disk. All of the big publishers of the time produced
games for the VIC-20: Atari, Broderbund, Epyx, HES, Imagic, Parker Brothers,
Sierra, and Sega. The VIC-20 is also host to the Holy Grail of computer game collecting, Ultima:
Escape from Mount Drash. There are very few copies known to
exist (two as of this writing). If you find one, it could be
the most valuable game you ever own. Hold on to it and let GOTCHA
know! You can find pictures of at least one of those copies at Tom Mage's
site: http://members.aol.com/barbgame/Drash/drash.html.
