There
arn't many real secrets
in Secret of Mana, however,
there are several interesting
features of the game that
you may not have come
across. Below is a list
of these tricks and how
you can discover them.
Sorry for the lack of
images, please be patient
while the rest are collected.

Secret
001: Faces In The World
Map
|
|
There
is a face in the ocean
of the world map between
Southtown and the Lost
Continent. The face is
situated in the middle
of this area. Fly flammie
as low as you can to get
a better look at the tiny
face.
|
|
There
is a second face situated
in the second set of mountains
South of The Empire.

Secret
002: The 9th Sword Orb
|
|
Warning:
This trick only works
on the NTSC version of
the game, not the PAL
version.
|
You
must have Flammie. Fly
near the Ice Country.
Directly off the coast,
still in white, not far
from the Ice Palace, is
a small, circular island.
Land on it. If you don't
see Neko directly in front
of you, call Flammie and
try again. This trick
will not work if you just
walk to Neko from somewhere
in the Ice Country. You
must land right next to
Neko. Once you have done
that, talk to Neko and
save the game. Press
and hold L, R, Select,
and Start for a couple
of seconds. The game should
restart on its own.
Start
a new game from the beginning.
Try not to kill any Rabites
on the way there, as it
may help increase the
chances of this trick
working. Play through
normally until you fall
through the hole into
the cave with the Mantis
Ant. After, not during,
not before, but after
everyone is done talking
and the battle is starting,
do not move, then hold
L, R, Select, and Start
for a few seconds and
the game will again restart
by itself.
Now
load the game you saved
at Neko. You should be
in front of the Mantis
Ant. Defeat it. Never
do this more than one
time. Doing it once shouldn't
glitch but doing it more
than once is asking for
trouble. After you have
collected all the normal
sword orbs, if you haven't
already, you'll have the
Mana Sword, the strongest
weapon in the game.
If you, like me, think
this secret is actually
too long to bother with,
scroll down to the bottom
of the page to read about
"ManaEdit"
to find out how to get
whatever you want in the
game quickly.

003: Seven Secret Passages
|
|
1)
Go to the inn at Matango.
Walk towards the inn owner.
Then walk down, and you
should be able to walk
through the wall and into
a black passageway. You
can walk all the way around
the inn until you get
to the doorway behind
the inn owner.
|
|
2)
Go to the southern-most
pathway in Northtown.
Then walk towards the
west(left) and keep going
until you cant walk anymore.
If you did this correctly,
you will have wound up
walking through a secret
path through the trees
and passed a clearing.
|
|
3)
Go to Tasnica. There is
a hidden shop underneath
some stairs. To get to
him, you must go to a
desk and walk through
a wall south of it.
|
|
4)
Go to Tasnica. Take the
left route and go to the
furthest room you can
get to. Then you will
notice a red carpet on
the eastern wall. Walk
on the carpet on through
the east wall. You will
end up in the right route.
|
|
5)
Go to Todo Village. Walk
on the bridge and press
up. You will find yourself
walking on ice.
|
|
6)
This secret is used to
get to the Moon Palace
before you get Flammie.
Go to Kakkara, then walk
outside the village to
the desert. Keep going
until you reach northeastern-most
area. You will see a passage
at the top that is blocked
off. Walk to the point
that Randi is at on this
picture: Then run to the
left. You will be able
to get across the blocked
path and if you continue
north, you will reach
Charons ferry, although
she is out for lunch.
|
|
7) In the fight against
the Mana Beast, as he charges
you, run left and down,
and with the other controller
have both magic users cast
Mana Magic on you. If timed
properly, as the Mana Beast
charges, you will be knocked
straight off the platform.
You can walk around a bit
until the game freezes.
Some say they have walked
far enough to see Charon's
Ferry. |

005: Rare Scenes
|
|
After
exiting Potos at the very
beginning, take Cannon
Travel to the Water Palace,
then without entering
the Palace, backtrack
by foot to Cannon Travel
and go to Gaia's Navel.
From here enter Pandora
through the back way and
visit the Castle. The
girl will instead of joining
you, hit you in the face
and run off. Now you can
visit the King and the
girl's Fiance. After seeing
the castle you can visit
the girl's house. She
will talk to you and vanish.
If you go to the second
room, she will yet again
vanish. Next you can go
to the Haunted Forest,
and get the girl to join
you. With her on your
team, keep going in the
forest until you arrive
at the spot where you
need the axe to get through
(she'll point it out).
Now you can take her to
Gaia's Navel without her
refusing, and you can
get your sword upgraded
before Luka even tells
you to! Careful though,
if you get the Sprite
on your team before getting
the spear, you can no
longer get the spear at
all! Return to the Palace
and continue the game.
Thanks very much to James
Smith for this info.

Secret
006: Cheat Death
|
|
This
is an easy way to avoid
being injured by an attack
launched by an enemy.
If offensive magic is
being cast among one of
your party, or they are
about to be struck with
an attack, quickly make
one of your other players
cast magic upon the players
in danger. Any magic or
item being cast upon one
or more of your party
should cause them to be
"pre-occupied"
while the attack is occuring.
This can make the difference
between loosing or winning
a battle against a boss,
so it's a good technique
to know.

Secret
007: Cliff Jumping
|
|
You
can do this at any gap
which you can cross with
the whip. Simply get your
characters on the jumping
area, and tap the controller
in the direction you want
to jump. Now charge the
whip to level 5 and release.
You will jump towards
where you are facing!
This trick is a useful
shortcut at certain areas
in the game, like Joch's
mountain path. In other
areas, it'll just get
you stuck in a wall or
such. To get unstuck,
transfer control to a
character who’s not stuck
in the wall and equip
him or her with the Whip.
Then move back in position
to use the Whip to cross
the gap. Your other two
characters will instantly
join you.

Secret
008: Special Spells
|
|
Elementals
reaching level 8:99 sometimes
have strange effects.
These super-powerful spells
have their own animations
and are very rare to see.

Secret
009: Alternative Confuse
Cure
|
|
Those
not used to controling
a confused character (handling
the controls backwards),
there is a simple answer.
Go to the controller settings
menu and reverse the commands.
Now everything works as
normal. This isn't actually
worth the bother though,
as confusion can be treated
by a Medical Herb or Undine's
Remedy spell which the
girl learns.

Secret
010: Totem Tongues
|
|
The
totempoles in the Great
Forest and near Gaia's
Navel stick out tounges
when you hit them with
the sword. They put them
back in when you hit them
again. The tongue will
stay out longer (or in
longer) if you hit the
totem poll properly.

Secret
011: Return To Potos
|
|
To sneak back into Potos
after being banished,
wait until you have at
least two characters,
then walk up to the guard,
and while you keep walking
towards him, press (select)
repeatedly, eventually
one will get through and
the rest of your team
(if they are with you)
will follow. This lets
you access the game's
first area, which is great
for weapon and magic level
building. To get out,
either call upon Flammie,
or try to get out in the
same manner, however,
it is a lot harder to
get out than it is to
get in.

Secret
012: Power Bonus
|
|
This trick allows your
characters to permanently
have super strength, speed,
defense, or any other
power from the girl's
magic menu. Simply cast
the spell of your choice
on any single character,
sleep at the Inn and immediately
save your game. Restart,
and the next time the
game is loaded, your character
will have that power permanently.
You can do this with as
many power spells as you
like, but some spells
may interfere with others
and cause previous powers
to disapear. Nevertheless,
this trick is great for
if your character is already
at its maximum power level
and you aren't satisfied
with his skills.

Secret
013: Permanent Weapon
Powers
|
|
Like the trick above,
but gives the power to
a weapon instead. Cast
a spell on a single character
equiped with the weapon
of your choice, and simply
go to the weapon selection
menu and switch the powered-up
weapon with a non- powered
up weapon equipped to
someone else. Try casting
Lunar on the sword for
constant HP regeneration.

Secret
014: Trapped In A Wall?
|
|
If ever this happens to
you, simply charge the
whip to level 6, point
the character in the direction
you want to go, and release.
You character will jump
in the direction he is
pointing. Repeat until
you are free.

|
Secret
015: Combo Offense
|
|
Have the sprite cast consecutive
attack spells. While this
happens, the boss is incapacitated
and cannot harm you. Cast
as many spells as it would
take to take off 999 HP
and then let the damage
happen, and repeat as
needed. You can also have
all your characters attack
individually at the same
moment for the same effect.

Secret
016: All Weapons Over
Level 8
|
|
To raise all of your weapon
levels passed 8:00 even
after obtaining all the
orbs and get all your
weapons to their maximum,
here is what to do. First,
equip two characters with
weapons already maxed
out (8:99), and your third
with the weapon which
will not rise in levels.
Next, go fight at a good
level-rasing area (such
as the path to Potos),
and there you go. Now
all the weapon points
will go towards the weapon
that will not go up. If
it still doesn't work,
try killing two or three
enemies at a time, that
will get it going for
sure.

Secret
017: Hidden Item
|
|
There is an item in Secret
of Mana that exists but
cannot be accessed unless
you are altering a ROM
of the game. It appears
at first to be some kind
of shield or nut. However,
it seems to be a scrapped
artifact in the game that
should no longer be accessed
by the player but now
can be. To see this strange
item for yourself you
will need ManaEdit which
is situated in the Emulation
Section.
