GoPlanes - (1997)
While not a modification of Sopwith, GoPlanes deserves mention in Sopwith history. GoPlanes is a DOS game created by Shawn LeBlanc, and according to Shawn:
"Goplanes isn't really strictly a clone of Sopwith, it's more of a game that's inspired by Sopwith. I took the fun parts of SW, like the control scheme, shooting helpless animals and added better graphics, better sound effects and power ups. It may be too different to have it be called a clone, but you can definatelly see the game's origins."
GoPlanes is an unfinished game (only 3 levels), but Shawn has given permission to make it public.
"Goplanes is a one player side scrolling action game with you at the controls of a Goplane, an old style, very agile and manuverable aircraft. You complete levels by accomplishing the mission objectives that are given at the beginning of the level. You pick up powerups and free lives laid around in boxes. You destroy these boxes to release them and touch them to pick them up.
Power Ups:
M - Missile.
A fast shooting powerful weapon.
D - Drop Bombs. blanket your enemies with these! As powerful as missles.
S - Spread shot. Shoots 8 bullets in 8 directions. Strong as your main weapon.
1-up - A free life!
COMPUTER REQUIREMENTS
It should run on a 486dx2/66 but I suggest a Pentium 90 at least to run it well. Optimizations are always being made, so the requirements should lower for people with slower computers.
