SNK vs. Capcom: The Match of the Millennium review by Bluefour

This is portable gaming at its finest. Not only a fighting game fan's dream come true but a great game with tons of features. There is a lineup of 26 total fighters. Heres the rundown.

  • Kyo: KOF's main character hasn't changed much since KOF R-2.
  • Terry: They seemed to have used terry Fatal Fury form.
  • Iori: Similar to KOF R-2
  • Ryo: More like his secret form from KOF R-2
  • Mai: Like Terry, FF form.
  • Haohmaru: They redid his animation! Looks great.
  • Yuri: Secret KOF R-2 form.
  • Nakoruru: Her animation is also redone.
  • Akari: I think this is her first appearence in a NGPC game. Funny moves/animation.
  • Athena: Not much different, funny animations for one super.
  • Geese: Different animation/slightly different moves from Fatal Fury First Contact.
  • Leona: Not too much different.
  • Orochi Iori: Same moves as Iori but completely different animation.

As you can see most of the SNK side has already made NGP appearences, but the capcom side...

  • Ken: SNK did a great job with his animation, not especially colorfull though.
  • Ryu: Pretty good Ryu likeness, not very colorfull.
  • Morrigon: OK, a little funny looking. Still has her costume change finishes though! Lilith also makes a guest appearence in a super.
  • Chun Li: A good rendition. Mostly Blue.
  • Zangief: Great! One of the most colorfull characters! His 360 moves are easy to do too!
  • Felicia: Has her signature cat like animations.
  • Sakura: Hmmm, not my favorite character, but Ok I guess.
  • Akuma: El Cheapo returns! They did a great job on his SD version.
  • Dan: The Pink Punisher returns funnier than ever. (Just do his level 2 super taunt!)
  • Baby Bony Hood: Heh heh, one of my favorite capcom characters, great SD version, but she isn't quite as an effective fighter as in Darkstalkers.
  • Guile: Pretty good. His sonic boom comes off a little slow.
  • M.Bison: Great SD version, kinda cheap, but not my favorite.
  • Evil Ryu: SNK outdid capcom on this one. Completely different animation!

Overall I really like the cast. I just wish there were more new SNK characters.

The control is good, a little tight, but not too bad. The gameplay is great. A mix between Marvel vs Capcom, KOF, and SF. You get to choose three styles: Average, regular 2 level super bars; Counter, sorta like extra mode in KOF; Rush, you can only use level 1 supers, but can do chain combos. You can also chooses 3 on 3 KOF style matches, 2 on 2 tag matches (like the versus series, no 2 char supers though), or 1 on 1. Great options right there but...

Olympic Mode! 6 different minigames including standard survival, time attack, blabla, but also game specific mini games. There is a slashing game with Jubei, a shooting game with Marco (from Metal Slug), a dancing game with Felicia, and a um jumping game with Arthur (Ghouls n Ghosts, ect). Playing these games gets you points which let you unlock new supers, such as Chun-Li's air super from Marvel vs Capcom, Akuma's super from SF 3 (i think), Ryu's shin shoryuken, and many more. The only replay value increasing feature I don't like is the way you unlock secret characters where you just beat the game over and over again to unlock the characters. It takes way too long.

The Graphics are great. The animation is wonderfull, as always, but this time the backgrounds are animated too! Their is also some nice parallax in some stages.

The sound isn't very high quality, but I like all the classic SNK and Capcom music so it works for me.

Overall this game is a must have.

    Score: A+++
