+---------------------+ | SAMURAI SHODOWN 2 | +---------------------+ Japanese Title: Samurai Spirits 2 System: Neo Geo Pocket Color Developer/Publisher: SNK Release Date: 10th June 1998 Genre: Fighting Game Size: 16-Megabit Cartridge FAQ by Kelvin Koh First Version: 13th June 1999 Last Revised : 27th June 1999 Contents: 1) Introduction 2) How to Play 3) Game System 4) Move List 5) Secrets/Extras ======================================================================== 1. INTRODUCTION ======================================================================== I was not expecting much from "Samurai Shodown 2". The first game was fun, but average at best, due to some major flaws. However, once you start playing SS2, you will be surprised at how much this title has improved over its predecessor! The gameplay & control in SS2 is very different from that of SS1, containing a mix of an improved SS weapons-fighting engine and various new features from other fighting games. The complicated commands of the previous game (which were cumbersome & frustrating to pull off) have been thankfully removed, and replaced with simple and easy-to-execute commands. This speeds up the pace of the fights, which used to be slow and dull. Moves which detracted from the gameplay back in SS1 have also been taken out and replaced with more useful ones which add more strategy & depth to the game. As you play the game, you will realize even more surprising changes (eg. You can no longer disarm your opponent), but a majority are for the better. The most unique & original addition to SS2 is the new Cards Collection system. Special cards can be earned by playing through the game and can be equipped for use during battles (such as increased attributes or a new move). You would want to try out all the characters in order to complete your Card Collection. This Cards system, together with the challenging Survival Mode, will keep you hooked on the game for hours. SS2 is an amazing improvement over SS1 and a very excellent title by itself. I recommend it to all NGP owners who are looking for a solid fighting game with lots of replay value. ======================================================================== 2. HOW TO PLAY ======================================================================== ------------------------------------------------------------------------ BASICS ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [DIRECTION-STICK] - Moves character - Hold BACK to Guard - Press UP to Jump - Press DOWN to Duck [A BUTTON] - Tap for LIGHT SLASH - Press for FIERCE SLASH [B BUTTON] - DODGE - KICK (while jumping) [OPTION BUTTON] - Pauses the game ----------------------------------------------------------------------- COMMANDS ----------------------------------------------------------------------- [RUN] - Tap FORWARD twice on the D-STICK. [DASHING ATTACK] - Press A or B when RUNNING. [BACK-STEP] - Tap BACK twice on the D-STICK. [GROUND RECOVERY] - When your character is down, press FRONT or BACK to make your character roll as he gets up. [RECOVERY ATTACK] - When your character is down, press A or B to attack your opponent as your character gets up. - A Button = HIGH ATTACK - B Button = LOW ATTACK [AIR RECOVERY] - When your character has been launched into the air, press A or B to recover in mid-air. [THROWS] - Your character will push/pull your opponent, leaving him open to attacks for a brief moment. - PUSH = When close, press Forward + A (hold) - SLAM = When close, press Back + A (hold) [PARRYING] - Your character will parry an incoming weapon attack, leaving your opponent stunned for a while. - HIGH PARRY = Forward + A - LOW PARRY = Down + A ------------------------------------------------------------------------ RAGE GAUGE ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Rage Gauge will fill up as your character receives damage. When it is filled, your attacks will inflict more damage than normal. You will also be able to perform your SUPER MOVE. [SUPER MOVE] - B,F,D + A This can only be performed when your RAGE GAUGE is full, or when you have performed the RAGE EXPLOSION. [RAGE EXPLOSION] - A + B After you input the RAGE EXPLOSION, your character will become momentarily invincible and performs an unblockable move which sends your opponent flying across the screen. Your Rage Gauge will now become a timer, which starts decreasing. Note that the size of the time gauge depends on your health. The lower your health when you perform the EXPLOSION, the longer your time gauge. During this period, you can perform Your character's SUPER MOVE or ISSEN. However, the downfall to performing the RAGE EXPLOSION is that you will lose your Rage Gauge entirely for the rest of the match. [ISSEN (SINGLE FLASH)] - After RAGE EXPLOSION, press A + B Your character will dash across the screen and finish off your opponent with a single powerful slash. This will drain your entire time gauge. The damage depends inversely on the amount of Health you have when you perform the EXPLOSION. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- SCS (SAMURAI COMBINATION SYSTEM) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- [COMBO STARTER] - Back + B After connecting with the COMBO STARTER, you can perform any of the following chains: [CHAIN 1] - A,A,A - A simple combo that does little damage, but charges up half of your Rage Gauge. [CHAIN 2] - A,B,B - A damaging combo that sends your opponent flying across the screen. [CHAIN 3] - B,B,B - This combo ends by launching your opponent into the air. You can then juggle your opponent with certain Special or Super Moves. ======================================================================== 3. GAME SYSTEM ======================================================================== ------------------------------------------------------------------------ PERSONALITY SELECT ------------------------------------------------------------------------ <<< SHURA (SLASH)/RASETSU (BUST) >>> The game allows you to select from 2 different personalities per character. The difference between each character personality lies in his Special and Super Moves. Both may share similar moves, but in addition, each personality also has its own set of original moves, which requires a different play style. This effectively doubles the number of characters in the game. For each character's moves, refer to the "Move List" section. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- CARD COLLECTION ------------------------------------------------------------------------- === Introduction === As you play through the game, you will find that you will receive Special Cards after fulfilling certain conditions. Besides admiring them in the Collection menu, you can also equip them (after you have selected your character) to produce different effects! *Note that you can only equip a maximum of 2 Cards at any one time. === About the Cards === There is a maximum of 4 cards to collect for 1 character-personality (Slash/Bust). These cards will grant the character with the following abilities: 1 = Increases Strength 2 = Increases Defence 3 = New Special Move 1 4 = New Special Move 2 You may view the descriptions written on the back of each card on your Collections menu or during the equipment screens. === How to Collect Them === The Cards have a rating on them (shown by the number of Stars), which indicate how RARE that particular Card is. A Card which is rarer is generally harder to obtain as the chances of its appearance is less. You can obtain character cards by doing any of the following: [1-PLAYER MODE] 1. Defeat your opponent with a SUPER MOVE. Receive - 1 of your character's Card (random worth). 2. Finish the game on EASY. Receive - 1 of your character's Card (worth 1 Star) - 1 random Card (worth 1 Star) 3. Finish the game on NORMAL. Receive - 1 of your character's Card (worth 2 Stars) - 2 random Cards (worth 1 Star each) 4. Finish the game on HARD. Receive - 1 of your character's Card (worth 3 Stars) - 1 random Card (worth 2 Stars) - 2 random Cards (worth 1 Star each) 5. Continuing 4 times on EASY, and then losing (GAME OVER). Receive - 1 of your character's Card (worth 1 Star) 6. Continuing 8 times on NORMAL, and then losing (GAME OVER). Receive - 1 of your character's Card (worth 2 Stars) 7. Continuing 12 times on HARD, then losing (GAME OVER). Receive - 1 of your character's Card (worth 3 Stars) [SURVIVAL MODE] 8. For every 8 fighters you defeat. Receive - 1 of your character's Card (random worth). [VS MODE] 9. Obtain 3 wins in a row. Receive - 1 of your character's Card (random worth). Note that the Cards you receive are random, and you may obtain 2 or more of the same Card while playing (up to a maximum of 8 of the same card). This will mean that you'll have to play through the game with the same character-personality again, or you can link up with a friend to trade your extra Cards. ======================================================================== 4.
