Pacman review by Monkey
When the NGPC was first released here in Holland, I always had the intention of buying Pac-Man. I liked the arcade version very much (unfortunately I've never played the real arcade version, only emulated). It never quite came to buying it, as I was busy buying all sorts of newer games, and I forgot Pac a bit. I bought the game after the pull-out of SNK, in a shop that had apparently not sent back their games. At first I was a bit disappointed with my dusty treasure, but after I played it a bit more I began to really love it.
Graphics
In scroll mode (you can choose between two "Totally Cool Game Screen
Designs"), the graphics are perfect. They look just like the arcade
version, very simple but just great. The animations are very smooth.
In full screen mode, the graphics are ~soso~. It's all squeezed down to
fit the screen. The ghosts look kind of cute, but Pac-Man looks really
chunky. The Coffee Break screens are normally sized.
Sound
The sound is a lot like the arcade's, but it sounds a bit different.
The wailing background is really psyching you up, as it should be.
The sound effects are nice, but nothing special.
Gameplay
The gameplay is great. I just never get enough of eating dots, ghosts
and fruit. It's perfect for a quick play on the bus or on the toilet, or
anywhere.
It can be really addictive, and it's just as fun in ten years from now.
I always play in full screen, because I hate it when you can't see all
the dots and ghosts at once.
The cross-rings make the NGPC's joystick perfect for Pac-Man (and Cat
Walk!).
Presentation/Value
It's a really naked version of Pac-Man. There are no options, secrets,
or whatever. Your high scores aren't even saved.
On the other hand, Pac-Man doesn't need more than just that. I'm really
glad that they didn't make a shitty 3D thing, or some weird clone with
super moves, but they could easily have made a saving option (for the
high scores) and included Ms Pac-Man, on an 8 megs cart.
It's just solid, simple Pac-Man. No more, no less.
Overall
I'm very happy that I bought the game. Although I'm really bad at
Pac-Man, I love it. It's fun to play for the rest of your life.
If you like classic Pac-Man, you really should buy it.
