King of Fighters R-2 review by Bluefour

*Please note that at the time of my writing this I do not have any other Neo-Geo Pocket fighters to compare. Also note that this review is based on the game in color.

SNK launched the black and white Neo Geo Pocket with KOF R-1 as the flagship title so what better way to launch the color version than with a color-enhanced sequel to one of, if not the best games designed for the black and white Neo-Geo Pocket. KOF R-2 adds two new characters (Kasumi and Saisyu), color support, and an interesting create-a-fighter mode.

Graphics: B++
The first aspect of KOF R-2 that impressed me was wonderful animation. You simply must see it to believe it. Some characters animation (such as Shingo1s) easily rivals many home 2-D fighters. As far as color in the characters, it works well. Most characters are only composed of several colors but they still look colorful. The backgrounds are nicely detailed and well colored but seem a bit distant from the action. The characters don1t seem like they are standing on a bridge, or street they look like they are standing in front of a poster of a bridge or a street. The characters make the transition to the SD (super-deformed) style and still have the same personality and attitude of their small-headed counterparts. Overall the graphics are very good.

Gameplay:A+
This is were KOF R-2 (and all the KOF games) really shines. Unlike fighters on other portables, the gameplay is not dumbed down at all. All the specials, supers, combos, counters, and other gameplay elements have made it into the 16-meg cart. The gameplay is wonderfully strategic as opposed to some other button-smashathon fighters out their. If you are familiar with KOF than you know what to expect; gamelplay excellence. As far as KOF R-21s new gameplay additions their is the interesting making mode. In making mode you choose a character, name him/her, and collect different skills that can be equipped.

Sound:B-
Although the sound effects aren't up to par with other 16-bit systems (such as the Super Nintendo/Famicom and the Genesis) it is still very good for a portable. The KOF tunes we all know and love have been nicely reproduced with the NGPC different sound effects. (*Listen to KOF R-2 with headphones or speakers for a stereo treat) There is a nice array of sounds for the different types of collisions. (such as being hit by electricity, fire, ect...) The sound effect and music are nice and fit the game well.

Overall:A
With good graphics, amazing gameplay, good sound and plenty of replay value (which making mode and finding the hidden characters greatly helps), KOF R-2 is a game no NGPC owner should be without.
