Biomotor Unitron review by Dacalo
Biomotor Unitron, the first RPG to be produced for NGPC, is much anticipated. With awesome mecha machines with RPG elements, this game was much talked about. When I finally got this 8 Meg cart, I almost wet my pants. Please remember that this is english version.
Graphics - B
This may sound harsh, but I was somewhat disappointed with the graphics. Although town scenes and NP interactions are very
colorful and detailed, battle scene is somewhat bleak. Sure, the mechas look cool, but the minimal usage of colors makes the
graphics somewhat very simplistic. Don't expect fireworks during battles. On the plus side, your mechas change apperance
according to the weapon mounted and look nice. Don't get me wrong; the graphics are detailed but are not that colorful. Monsters,
however, look very non-threatening.
Sound - C+
The sounds do their job of creating the mood; cheery music in town and ominous music in the dungeons. However, I found the battle
music VERY annoying. This is my personal opinion however. The first Final Fantasy for Gameboy had better sound than this and that
game was made 9 years ago!
Gameplay- B
Ok, let me say this now. This game is not a true RPG. Yes, you heard it right. There are no quests; no realms to be saves nor any
princesses. The world consists of 4 dungeons and the main town. The dungeons are unique and has its own elemental configuration
(earth, fire, wind, water). The point of the game is to go to dungeons, earn money, experience points, treasures, and then go back to
town and participate in the local Arena and fight for the glory. You can customize your mecha, from arms, core, jetpack to what kind
of accessories (like rings in Final Fantasy) to wear. A cool element is that you can development your own arms (weapons) by
combining arms with precious metals. There must be thousands of combinations. Lack of quest makes this game somewhat shallow,
the plot consisting of "be-the-best" theme. An RPG? Hmmm...
Overall - B+
Ok, I am being negative to the game, but I know this is the first RPG (?) for NGPC, made by Yumekobo, not by Square Soft. I am
happy with the purchase, although I guess I was too much into the hype. Just don't expect too much. The game is fun for a portable.
Yumekobo could have made this game SO much better, since Japan right now is in an RPG frenzy. There is so much potential in this
game. I would say if you are not a true RPG fan, wait for Dive Alert. But if you are just dying to play something close to an RPG pick
this up. I can't wait until BioMotor II.
