------------------ =========================================== | 1) History/Updates | =========================================== Version 0.1 (May 4, 1999) -added parts 1, 2, 3 of Section 1 Version 0.2 (May 7, 1999) -added parts 4, 5, 6 of Sections 1, 2 -added section 8 and added on to various other sections I've got quite a bit so far, but I'm only at the tip of the iceberg! What needs to be added: Which element is strong against what. Make the FAQ look more attractive. The rest of the city introduction in Section 2. =========================================== | 2) Introduction | =========================================== I was overjoyed at the thought of a Neo Geo Pocket RPG. Despite the fact that I didn't have the color version of the handheld, I preordered Biomotor Unitron, despite my somewhat disappointing experience with another Yumekobo game a few weeks earlier. The Neo Geo has a serious deficit when it comes to RPG games, perhaps its pocket counterpart will be able to break out of that mold. In any case, Biomotor Unitron is a great step in that direction. This FAQ/translation is for the Japanese version. As of this writing, there is no official announcement concerning North American release of this game for the Neo Geo Pocket Color. If/when there is a US release of this game, I would appreciate being notified of any game differences. Section 1 is essentially a basic intro, as well as a translation and condensation of the more important parts of the manual. Section 2 is a walkthrough and guide to the core of the game. Section 3 is where the miscellaneous information concerning the game is, and Section 4 is a catalog of the different items and weapons. Section one won't be updated much at all, section two will be updated regularly as I progress through the game, maybe weekly or semi-weekly. Section three will be updated whenever I find something or someone notifies me of something they've found. Section four will be done last, when I've beaten the game, and have most of the items. Biomotor Unitron is an RPG-sim style game, following in the footsteps of Pokemon. It involves building a mech, called a unitron, and battling, upgrading, and leveling it. There are various goals in the game that must be achieved in order to progress, and there are people who you can talk to who will give you hints, and sometimes helpful items in your quest. 2.2) The Translation Okay, to start off, it's not like I'm not going to make mistakes. However, with this player's guide/FAQ/translation/walkthrough, you should be more than able to find your way through the game with a reasonable understanding of what's happening. I'll try not to be too vague, but I won't do a hand-holding walkthough either. I'm only a second-year Japanese student, and if you see a mistake, by all means point it out to me. If your Japanese is better than mine, please get in touch with me, I could use a consultant. If or when there is an American release date announced, the status of the translation section of this guide will be put on hold, and the FAQ section will continue to be updated. With that said, I honestly hope this helps you play the game, and from one gamer to another, enjoy! [Stuff in brackets, like this, aren't part of the game, and are my comments or notes] =========================================== | 3) Getting Started | =========================================== A few basics before we start: whenever there is a small dialog box that goes across the screen horizontally, it's probably asking for confirmation. as a general rule, yes (hai) is on the left, while no (iie) is on the right. Also, all numbers are in arabic numerals (ie. 1234567890) so you should be able to read those. In addition, statistic acronyms are in English letters such as hitpoints will be "HP" and the like. With that said... First, when you turn on the system, you will see the Neogeo Pocket logo, then the Yumekobo logo, and after that the Biomotor Unitron intro movie. After that, there will be a title screen with three options: The first is "New Game" which is fairly self explanatory. Next, is "Load Game," and last is "Game Options." 3.1) Starting a New Game Okay, first when you start the game, it will ask you who you want to pick. The character on the left is your main character, and the character on the right is your partner, who will act as your Unitron mechanic for the rest of the game. The selections as you go right are: Human(Rod, Lina) Human(Lina, Rod) Forester(Chris, Leaf) Forester(Leaf, Chris) Mariner(Zappa, Sheila) Mariner(Sheila, Zappa) Baadian(?)(Phaser, Shirufii) Baadian(Shirufii, Phaser) [Note: Which race you pick determines which Unitron body you get. See Section 7 for more details.] After you pick, it will ask you "Is this okay?" Select "Yes" on the left, or "No" on the right. The next screen's title is "Determine your name" Obviously, it gives you a selection of characters. It might be easier if you choose your name in English in case it's too hard for you to read the name. The options on the right say: Hiragana Katakana Return [Go back to character select] Decision [Accept what you've entered] 3.2) Loading a Saved Game This is pretty obvious. The game give you three slots, it enters your name, and you and your mechanic's levels. Pick one, it will ask for confirmation. Yes is the option on the left, no is on the right (this is the same throughout the game) 3.3) Changing Game Options At the options screen, the first option reads "Message speed." The one on the left is fast, and the one on the right is slow. The next option reads "Combat animation" ON/OFF is selectable. Last is "Erase save data" =========================================== | 4) What's a Unitron? | =========================================== A Unitron is your mech in the game. It has two arms, which each have their own stats, graphics and attacks. (To be completed later) Section 2 - =========================================== | 5) The Beginning | =========================================== 5.1) Intro to Planet Elscea When you select your character's names, you'll see a picture of a planet. A (very rough)translation of this introduction: " ...There, This long war began from a single meteorite. Planet Elscea, and many lives, were changed forever. A period of darkness began. At that time, the sky shone crimson. A single meteor appeared. In the future, it would be called "Unitis". That meteor fell in the biggest lake on the continent of Tridiss. Instantly, the lake was blown off. The spot where it fell sunk underground. A shaking stayed in King Rafiasu's (?) country for a long time. In Unitis, there was a special kind of energy crystal. Its reports have become clear." [Author's note: I really couldn't get much more than this out of the translation. Maybe I'm just really bad at this, or they were intentionally being vague and mysterious.] 5.2) Intro to Tridiss After that little story, there will be another one about the continent the story takes place on, Tridiss. Unfortunately, I am playing with a Black and White NGP, and the text in this section is very hard to see, which makes translation all the harder. Expect this section to be updated later, if at all. " The plot has thickened. Uni-tron crystals have infinite energy." [I've only translated this line so far... Also, I don't why it separates Uni and tron.] =========================================== | 6) Getting your Unitron | =========================================== [First screen, a picture of a city] Capital City of Rafiasu [Press A, An Elf appears] Elf: I'm Garu. [this conversation to be completed later, it's not that important] [next, you go into the hangar, and you meet with your mechanic. To summarize, your mechanic asks you if you slept well last night, and then tells you that your Unitron isn't ready yet, so you should come back later. All the female mechanics say the same thing, and all the male mechanics say the same thing. The difference between the male and the female characters is only their manner of speaking.] Okay, to make a long story short, you have to go talk to everyone. There will be a translation of what they say here later, but right now it's not important. Just go through every possible option (It won't take too long) and then go back to the first one, and you'll get your Unitron. =========================================== | 7) Unitron 101 | =========================================== Okay, now you've got your Unitron. Your Unitron has a few basic parts: a body, two arms (right and left), legs, a core, a backpack, and two accessory slots. Which race your characters are affects which Unitron body you have. Of course, the arms and legs and such are still interchangable. I'm fairly sure that all parts add varying amounts of HP to your total (in addition to one other stat), depending on the part. For example, Leg X will add 15 to your RP, and 30 to your HP. Your Unitron levels with experience, which you get from battling monsters and other Unitrons in the arena and the dungeons. 7.1) Body To be quite honest, I'm not exactly sure about how this works. I currently have a "Body Level 1" and I haven't seen any upgrades for it yet. I assume it affects armor class. 7.2) Arms You have two arms, each with its own weapon. Different weapons have different properties of attack, such as fire, wind, water, etc. Experiment to see which attributes do more damage to what kinds of monsters (I'll add a list sometime). Arms can be upgraded to do more damage (see section 8). I believe that each arm has its own speed, which determines the order of attack when both you and your opponent have selected attacks. However, I'm somewhat confused with the MP (see section 7.5) Elemental properties of arms: Fire Wind Tree Water Earth Light Darkness Mirror 7.3) Legs Legs affect your RP, which is your reaction ability accordin to the manual. It affects your attack, hit and evasion efficency. 7.4) Core Different level cores are available. The power core of your Unitron determines the EP, which is the meter from which your attacks are done. The EP number is your maximum offensive capability. See (Section 7.9) 7.5) Backpack Your backpack affects your MP. The manual isn't too clear on what this is. It says it affects attack order, but I was under the impression that arm speed determined that. 7.6) Accessories The accessories have varying effects. Usually they'll enhance some of your stats, such as HP, SP, etc. They are available from the shop, and are also usually given out as prizes for raising a grade in the arena. 7.9) Battle system You go into battle with another Unitron or monster. You have HP, which is your life (if it goes to zero, you lose), you have EP, which is a meter of your energy. Using attacks uses up EP, and generally the more powerful the attack, the more it depletes your EP reserves. Each of your weapons uses EP at a constant rate per attack. The menu you will see to the right of your unitron is as follows: 7.91) Attacks Your first option, attack, lets you choose from either of your two arms. At the bottom there will be a description of the attack along with "EP X" but instead of the X, it will have a number representing how much EP the attack will use up. 7.92) Items The next option, item, allows you to use a variety of items either on yourself or on the opponent. Generally, they will increase a certain statistic of yours by a percentage or decrease one of your opponent's by a percentage. My recommendation is to use these only when you need them (and on the bosses, you WILL need them) because they are quite powerful, and can easily turn the tides in your favor. Also, along simpler lines are the repair items, repair 1, repair 2, and repair 3, they are easy to identify by their numbers and are at the front of the list. They are your basic heal potions. The disadvantage, however, is that you can only carry 9 of anything. You will quickly find that you will want repair 3's as your level increases. Of course, this limit requires you to manage your inventory rather responsibly, so keep an eye out for that. =========================================== | 8) The City | =========================================== The city, which is more or less the main menu, has several options down the right side. They are (in order): Studio [Hangar] Shop Arena Town Square Dungeon 8.1) The Studio [Hangar] Here, in the hangar, is where you do most of your Unitron maintenance/upgrade stuff. The options down the right side are: Complete equipment Development Item Status Trade [requires link] Help Data administration (Save game) Return to the City 8.11) Complete equipment This lists the equipment you have, and all the equipment you've ever had at some point. Going down the list: BD[BoDy] Body LV[Whatever level your body is] RA{Right Arm] [Whatever weapon is equipped for your right arm] LA[Left Arm] [Whatever's in your left arm] UC[Unitron Core] Level [number] core LG[LeGs] [Leg equipment] BP[BackPack] [Backpack][level number] A1[Accessory 1, not the steak sauce] [Whatever you've got equipped] A2[Accessory 2] [Same as above] Obviously, move the cursor to whatever you want to change, and then change it. If you have an item, but don't have it anymore, it will still be listed, but with a x0. If you have something equipped, it will not count in the number of how many of that item you have. For example, if I have two lancers, and one is equipped, it will say: "Lancer x1" When you highlight an item in your inventory, it will give the stats of your Unitron if you equip that item. After you equip a new item, it will show a picture of your Unitron with the new equipment on it. 8.12) Development Learning the development option is crucial to winning the game. Development is giving an arm (weapon) to your mechanic and asking him or her to upgrade it. There are three components needed for an arm upgrade. 1) an arm (duh) 2) a material and 3) a tool. These are the three blanks you see in development mode on the right side of your screen. First, select an arm you want your mechanic to attempt to upgrade. Then, select a material, and a tool. Different materials and tools are available, each of different quality and price. Periodically, your mechanic will ask you if you really want to do it. As always, yes is on the left, no on the right. After you tell him/her to do it, there will be some crashing/hammering noises, and one of two things will happen. One, your mechanic will succeed, saying "Wow! I've created a brand new arm!" It will then show you the new look of the arm, which resembles the old one, but lookes more beefed up. If this happens, your mechanic goes up a level. The other possibility is, your mechanic will fail, and in the process destroy the arm, the material, and the tool. This is just another part in the trial and error process, and can get quite frustrating, but keep at it, your mechanic will get better. The tools available are simply, "Tool 1, Tool 2..." the number is there, so it's easy to distinguish. The different materials are: Steel Silver Gold Mithril [These are all that I've found, there's two pages of them.] 8.13) Item I don't feel that Item involves anything special, but just in case, I made this section. 8.14) Status Self-explanatory. It can be pretty useful at times. 8.15) Trade I don't have a link, and if I did, I'm the only one I know with an NGP, so I'd appreciate some help here, if anyone's linked BioUnitron yet... 8.14) Help This isn't very helpful to a non-Japanese speaking gamer. However, you can look up the symbols on page 2 of the help. They are in this order (fire, wind, tree, water, earth, light, darkness, mirror). The rest of the help section is essentially the manual, most of which I have or will tranlate in this text. 8.15) Data administration Use this to save your game. Choose a slot. 'Nuff said. If it asks for confirmation, the one on the left is yes... 8.2) The Shop 8.3) The Arena Once you have a Unitron, you can fight in the arena. To raise your grade, you must pass a test. This test involves paying an entrance fee, then beating a few Unitrons, and then a boss, which is a lot harder than the other ones. If you pass, you raise a rank, and gain lots of experience points from beating the boss. If not, you lose your entrance fee. [translated from the manual] Ranks: Grade: Title: Cost to Enter: Championship Master of Masters 100,000 Grade S High Master 50,000 Grade A Lord 25,000 Grade B Duke 10,000 Grade C Marukisu(?) 5,000 Grade D Bisukanto(?) 2,500 Grade E Rookie 1,000 When you do beat the boss to raise a grade, you will be congratulated by the arena manager, John. He will then give you some amount of money (which I recommend you invest in upgrades for the next grade) and also a prize, which is a useful item.
