Counter-Strike, the world’s number one online action game series, is a first-person shooter developed by Valve Software, the creators of the renowned Half-Life series. This team-oriented online shooter pits terrorists and counter-terrorists against one another in round-based combat set all over the world. Using the power of the “Source” engine, the original Counter-Strike has been completely remade as Counter-Strike: Source—offering upgraded graphics, levels, and the implementation of a new physics engine. Counter-Strike will never be the same!
First released to the public on June 18th, 1999, Counter-Strike began as a simple fan-produced mod for Half-Life. Thanks to a series of steadily-improving beta releases, the mod started to foster a progressively-enlarging and dedicated following. As the fast-paced, tactical game play was refined and improved, and as new concepts and maps were introduced, Counter-Strike moved from being a mere Half-Life mod to an entirely new game.
With the release of Steam, Valve's digital content delivery system, Counter-Strike found a new footing within the gaming community. Counter-Strike’s first single-player chapter, Counter-Strike: Condition Zero (Developed by Valve and Turtle Rock Studios), was a great success, bringing many new features and upgraded graphics to the classic game. The release of Counter-Strike: Source only helped boost the series further towards its now legendary status. Counter-Strike is about as close as you’ll ever get to saving the world; or destroying it!

Valve Reports on Lifetime Retail Sales 9:32 PST | John Phillips | Print News | Category: Half-Life - Half-Life 2 - Counter-StrikeIt's been very obvious over the last decade that Valve makes money, and a lot of it. In an article at Gamasutra, Valve goes into just how many individual copies of the Half-Life franchise that they've sold since Half-Life hit the shelves a little over a decade ago.
Half-Life: 9,300,000 Copies Sold Half-Life: Opposing Force: 1,100,000 Copies Sold Half-Life: Blue Shift: 800,000 Copies Sold Half-Life 2: 6,500,000 Copies Sold Half-Life 2: Episode One: 1,400,000 Copies Sold The Orange Box: 3,000,000 Copies Sold Along with the staggering Half-Life numbers, Valve has also let out just how many copies of Counter-Strike, the most heavily played non-MMO online game in the world, has sold.
Counter-Strike (PC): 4,200,000 Copies Sold Counter-Strike (Xbox) 1,500,000 Copies Sold Counter-Strike: Condition Zero: 2,900,000 Copies Sold Counter-Strike: Source: 2,100,000 Copies Sold These numbers themselves seem very impressive, but keep in mind that these don't include digital distribution sales (Steam), but Valve states that digital distribution copies of these (and future) titles will in fact surpass retail sales. Left 4 Dead sales are estimated to me 20-30% greater than that of The Orange Box, thus bringing Left 4 Dead sales between 3.6 and 3.9 million copies sold. Click here for the full article.
Garry's Mod is also fairing very well in sales, and since it went commercial just over two years ago, it has sold more than 312,500 copies, selling an impressive 5,729 on the first day alone. Congratulations on the great success, Garry!
