RCHS Class Reunion -- Games -- Soccer

World Cup Soccer / Nekketsu Koukou Soccer
One of the most widely ported games in the series, probably because soccer's popular all over the world (the pictures to the right are of the Megadrive, NES, and Megadrive versions respectively). This isn't the most realistic soccer simulation ever, but if you wanted realistic soccer you ought to go out and play the damn sport yourself.
It takes a unique approach to controlling the action which I've never seen in any other soccer game; you only control the team captain directly and give orders to your teammates. Before the match begins you set up your team's strategy (run with the ball or pass downfield, play aggressively, shoot when possible, etc.) and get a chance to revise it at half-time. Your teammates always seem to know what they're doing, and you can order them to shoot, pass, or attack the guy with the ball if you're on defense.
There are only a couple "special moves" that I know of, and they're the diving headbutt and bicycle kick. To pull off the bicycle kick you'll have to get someone to pass the ball to you and position yourself right to kick it out of mid-air. If you pull it off, it always seems to go in, as long as it's aimed correctly.
There's not much deep strategy to the game, but the NES version has 4-player capability, there are many teams to choose from, and it's addictive. It'd make a good party game.
The Megadrive version has better graphics and voice samples, but other than that it's not as fun. The game plays like the ball is full of sand, since even a bicycle kick usually loses velocity before making it to the goalie's box. It only supports 2 players. The PC-Engine version plays very choppy and slow, and the characters are shaded in an ugly manner. As for the Gameboy version, I suppose it's just like all the other Nekketsu GB ports... same thing, without color, and less stuff fits on the screen.
