REVIEW: Baldur's Gate: Tales Of The Sword
Coast
Baldur's Gate was one of the best RPGs of 1998 and, this year, Interplay brings us an expansion pack called Tales Of The Sword Coast (TOTSC). When a game plays and looks this good, you really have to stretch for complaints. For example, TOTSC is an absolutely horrible acronym. This failing aside, TOTSC is as much a classic as the original. It still has some of the original's drawbacks, but it's the closest a game has come to AD&D on the computer.
The action in TOTSC takes place right before the climax of Baldur's Gate. Therefore, TOTSC is not really a sequel, and it's definitely not a prequel. It's just a "quel" (if such a thing exists). Players take their original party from Baldur's Gate (a premade party is also provided with TOTSC) on new quests before their showdown with the evil Sarevok. If you have already beaten Sarevok, you get another chance to do it right. Baldur's Gate automatically saves the game for you before the final battle, and it will be updated to reflect the expansion. This time, when you meet Sarevok, expect an even tougher battle.
The big additions in TOTSC are found in four main areas. The first is
the town of Ulgoth's Beard, where the party starts the game. The town
itself isn't terribly interesting, but it is the starting point for the
three major quests. The easiest quest is to fetch Shandalar's cape from
the Isle Of Ice. This isle is like a magnet that attracts and traps
sorcerers with the ability to teleport over the ocean.
