My favorite book/radio show/TV series: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (THGG). My favorite comedy group: Monty Python. My favorite hobby: computer games. Theoretically, if Douglas Adams (the author of THGG) teamed up with members of Monty Python to create a computer game, I would experience such bliss that my brain would spontaneously combust--much like a planet being demolished to make way for a hyperspatial express route.

Fortunately for me, the preceding scenario has taken place (except for the part about my brain--please keep rude comments to yourself) in the form of Starship Titanic, a new adventure game published by Simon & Schuster Interactive, written by Douglas Adams, and starring the voice talent of Monty Python's Terry Jones.

However, the bliss generated by this holy trinity of sorts has subsided, and I must face reality. I enjoyed playing Starship Titanic, and I recommend it, but keep in mind that I am a big fan of this group. (I mean really big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big a fan I am.) Those less fanatical might not come away with the same appreciation I had.

There is a lot to like about Starship Titanic. The graphics are exceptional. The rendered artwork is gorgeous, and I found the interface (called a Personal Electronic Thing--PET) easy to use once I got past the small learning curve. The Myst-like navigation is easy to grasp, and special efforts have been made to keep it from being redundant.Starship Titanic For example, when you turn right, if there is nothing of interest in that direction, just turn around 180 degrees. Sound is also top quality. The music changes based on location, giving each part of the ship its own atmosphere.

The voice acting is also impressive, with the most memorable performances coming from Douglas Adams as the Succ-U-Bus and Terry Jones as the parrot. In fact, Jones plays the annoying parrot so convincingly that I've often been tempted to reenact an impromptu rendition of Monty Python's dead parrot sketch. I also enjoyed the voice of the reluctant bomb, which I suspect is played by John Cleese, although credit is given to Kim Bread. Technically, I also liked the way sounds change direction and volume based on where the player stands in relation to the source.
