CNET Gamecenter Review

Call me Elmer. Some years ago--never mind how long precisely--Elmer Fudd was tricked into believing it was duck season when it was really rabbit season. Now, GTE Entertainment is trying to pull a Bugs Bunny on me, saying that it's basketball season when I know it's really football season. Being the dumb-hunter type (I know how to shoot a brick, at least), I gave the game a try, and I'm glad. Even though GTE has bad timing, they have a good NCAA basketball game.

The first thing that impresses me about this game is its 166-page manual. Although it's no Moby Dick, it's well written and even interesting at times. Besides the usual technical information you'd expect, there are facts and statistics about the NCAA's history. When a manual is as heavy as a regulation NCAA basketball, I'm impressed.

quote There are 64 teams divided into eight regions, which are loosely based on real NCAA conferences. For example, the Atlantic Region is made up of eight of the nine teams comprising the Atlantic Coast Conference; Clemson is omitted for some unknown reason. Since not all teams are represented and the conferences are rearranged, the yearly schedules are not true to life. However, the season is little more than a way to kill time until March Madness arrives, and the 64 teams included are there to fill the brackets in the NCAA tournament.

Each team is made up of 12 players, which can be liberally substituted into the game after a dead ball or time-out. Make substitutions often, otherwise players become exhausted and won't be worth the $180 sneakers on their feet. Each player has unique offensive, defensive, and physical skill rankings, and, although necessary, giving your best players a breather can cost you the game. Determine who your go-to guys are, and keep them from going to the bench too often.
