Dictionary of Video Gaming previously defined Madden: "Madden
(mad'n) v.t. 1. To anger or infuriate gamers by constantly delaying the
release of a legendary football game. See Electronic Arts." However, that definition
is now out of date because "the #1 sports game of all time" has finally
arrived. Whether you like watching, coaching, or playing, Madden 97 has it
all.
If you like to watch, you'll be impressed with Madden's stellar
graphics and sound. The team helmets, logos, and uniforms are exquisitely
detailed. Numbers are accurate, and most players even have a playing card
graphic associated with them. Just turn on demo mode, watch the game,
listen to Pat Summeral, and pop open a brew (brew sold separately). Even
if you choose to occasionally swap your beer for a gamepad, you can let
the computer control the action until you decide to take over; it's a
great way to learn the game. There's also an excellent instant replay
feature that lets you see the action from any angle or distance, and you
can save your favorite plays for later viewing. These features make Madden
97 a mouse potato's dream come true.
