Those PC gamers who turn up their noses at consoles probably never ran into the classic console character Bomberman. If this includes you, think of Bomberman as a digital Jackie Chan. Both are short, both from Asia, both enjoy worldwide popularity, and both kick ass. Now PC gamers have a chance to meet Bomberman in person, thanks to Interplay's new take on an old classic: Atomic Bomberman.

At its core, Atomic Bomberman is a faithful conversion of the Super Bomberman series (there were five Super Bomberman titles produced for the SNES/Super Famicom). Gameplay is faithful to the originals and takes only about five minutes to learn--move around the overhead-view maze, drop bombs, and avoid getting blown up.

are you a purist?
The challenge comes from learning to use the various power-ups properly. These give Bomberman the ability to punch, kick, or throw bombs while avoiding viruses that cause short fuses, sloth, and other dysfunctions. Atomic Bomberman has some of the newer power-ups but also omits some classics like kangaroos (introduced in Super Bomberman 3). This will thrill Bomberman purists and anger Bomberman extremists. It is not widely known outside of console circles, but a political struggle has been raging for years between these two Bomberman factions. The struggle revolves Atomic Bombermanaround which Bomberman game is best, and since there is no clear favorite, Bomberman matches often determine the philosophical victor.

Thankfully, Interplay didn't experiment with gameplay too much. Instead the focus is on improved graphics and sound, which are both the best to date. This is a smart move that will be appreciated by both purists and extremists. Players can tailor many game options, including the number of kills necessary to win and the match timer (from one minute to infinity). However, there is no way to disable the brand-new taunts spouted by Bomberman throughout the game. Not only does this potentially slow down gameplay, but also it will anger purists who feel Bomberman shouldn't say things like "You are a stupid man's idiot" or "Talk to the hand."
