Post Posted: 07-20-2005 04:20 PM Post subject: James Doohan has passed away.

Copied from Sci-Fi wire http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire2005/index.php?category=0&id=31712

James Doohan, who played chief engineer Montgomery "Scotty" Scott in the original Star Trek and subsequent films, died early July 20 at his Redmond, Wash., home, the Associated Press reported. He was 85.

Doohan died at 5:30 a.m., with his wife of 28 years, Wende, at his side, Los Angeles agent and longtime friend Steve Stevens told the wire service. The cause of death was pneumonia and Alzheimer's disease, he said.

Doohan was born March 3, 1920, in Vancouver, B.C. Doohan was enjoying a busy career as a character actor when he auditioned for a role as an engineer in a new space adventure on NBC in 1966. A master of dialects from his early years in radio, he tried seven different accents.

"The producers asked me which one I preferred," Doohan recalled 30 years later, the AP reported. "I believed the Scot voice was the most commanding. So I told them, 'If this character is going to be an engineer, you'd better make him a Scotsman.'"

When Star Trek ended in 1969, Doohan found himself typecast as Scotty. But Star Trek continued in syndicated TV both in the United States and abroad, and its following grew larger and more dedicated. In his later years, Doohan attended 40 fan gatherings around the country and lectured at colleges. He eventually reprised the role in six Star Trek movies.

In a 1998 interview, Doohan was asked if he ever got tired of hearing the line "Beam me up, Scotty."

"I'm not tired of it at all," he replied. "Good gracious, it's been said to me for just about 31 years. It's been said to me at 70 miles an hour across four lanes on the freeway. I hear it from just about everybody. It's been fun."

It is very sad to see such a brilliant and caring actor travel to the undiscovered country however we must also be happy as he now no longer suffers from alzheimers disease a terrible thing for someone to suffer in old age.

Look out for a dedication video i will soon be releasing Neutral

PS i need some help with this one as i need a decent enterprise B and a Sydney class transport if anyone has one cheers pm or email me.

PPS I also need an FCA in start up mode with 1701 textures and some thoughts on a title so far ive got "James Doohan:A Tribute to a Miracle Worker" any thoughts?

How sad. Well, he's probably now laughing it up with Deforest Kelley in the afterlife.

I had no idea he had Alzheimers. What a terrible illness. To paraphrase a line spoken by Picard in TNG: "To see someone go from a commanding, competent figure, to a shadow of a man, not even able to find his way home at night." At least he's at peace now.

There's also a piece on him on www.startrek.com.

Oh my...

I will certainly miss James Doohan. He was one of my favorite actors in Star Trek. He definitely had a great handle on the character.

I give my condolences as well to his family and friends. I think everyone will agree with me when we say, he will be missed.

well, I don't think this needs to degrade into who's news agency/country ahndled ti best, but I saw the news item on ET this evening and he got a decent bit of of coverage, more so that most actor deaths, cetainly not THE most, (IE johny carson level) but decent, lasting a few minutes none the less.
