I have a couple Cyrix processors in old machines that live cupboards Even more lying on the floor in the shed

I think they got bought out by VIA or something.

I have overclocked a 100mhz processor to 133 (or 166, I don't remember) sir. At least, this is what it displayed in BIOS...

Even more amazing, is that I did so without knowing anything about overclocking. I had simply read an article in a magazine somewhere about overclocking, and that some of it was done with switches from the motherboard, opened the PC (it was an old, horizontal tower whose chassis didn't screw shut), saw some tiny switches, somewhere, 1 combination led to an "underclock" at 90mhz, one at a 100mhz, and one in 133, the rest made the PC not to start up.

Notably. I was also 10 year old. And the PC, neither mine or the Family's, or Family's friend, rather someone who looked after me for a while.

Looking back now, I probably changed some multiplier somewhere, at any rate, the important factor is that I had no idea over what I was doing then, neither the PC's owner.
I am sure, this gives you lovely mental images of what you don't want your little brother to be doing with your PC.

And if you can imagine that, then you can imagine the following scene:
PC owner enters his room. Little Senator proudly announces "I overclocked your PC!", he naturally ignores me, I insist pulling him towards the chair anxious to display my accomplishments, "I did, I opened your PC box and played with the motherboard and now it's 33mhz faster, etc" somewhere the "I opened your PC box" part appears to worry him, and he hastily sits down in front of the PC turning it on, clearly sighing in relief that it works, assuming at that point I guess, that I am making it all up.

At that point, (restart) I point at the increased displayed Processor speed, and his face turns into the purest form of "OMG, the terror!" and almost panickly reaches to turn off the PC, probably afraid that it will blow up or something.

I assure him with the best "the hardware is fully functional" look a 10 year old can master, that it works ok because I have "tested it" to see if it will crash, and as an answer I get a good upsidedown smack, while he proceeds to turn off the PC and open the box, telling me to explain "what I did". I point at the switches, but he didn't dare to touch them, or let me of cource, and insteed I receive more smacks around.

That I remember it so vividly, still points out the extreme dissapointment, that insteed of an aknowledgment of my engineering powrness, I got a good beating. He was doing careful restarts for the rest of the day seeing if the computer was ok, while I was sulking at how much adults suck insteed of being grateful that I increased his speed. The computer worked fine btw. I never overclocked another PC since then though.

Aparantly AMD's don't react as kindly to the removal of the cooling as Pentiums do. I actually expected it to be the other way around...

didn't surprised me, honestly. i've heard AMD had some problems with heat.

The reason it did suprise me was that Intel CPU's always take quite a lot of energy to run properly.

AMD on the other hand had already working on this problem when Intel was still adamant that it would just double the clock speed without any other modification.

AMD's have always had problems with heat until recently. My dad really wanted to get one when he went out and bought his P4 1.6Ghz machine, alas they didnt have built in temperature sensors as Intel's ones did. That was just there main problem. Now with the later Athlon XP's and the new ranges they all have thermal warning tech and they are usually very reliable anyway.
