First Off, I would request that this thread be made stickey, as it will come in handy to alot of people.

Here are 2 links that I cane across, one of which contains mesh and textures for you to use to try it all out.

This is excellent stuff! I was gritting my teeth together on how i would do this. Im just starting out modelling, so the scifi-art.com is really helpful, and i already knew about the aztech method. Cheers mate for posting it!

Though mostly for high poly modelers (some low poly tutorials there) a great site is http://www.3dtotal.com if you want to learn the basics. Also, check out the Dawnstar thread, I posted the original textures in PSD format to provide you with an example.

I've recently added a tutorial to Scifi-meshes.com with regards to texturing.
It's an enhancement of one I wrote for Half-Life modelling a few years back. It's designed to teach how to texture hi-res models using bitmaps instead of procedural textures and whilst it uses a high-res model and some of MAX's settings that are irrelevant to BC, it's pretty much the same principle as is commonly used to texture game models. Some tips on 'weathering' textures and creating decals is also included.
The site host converted my HTML to PDF so you'll need Adobe Acrobat reader to view the tutorial.

http://www.scifi-meshes.com/tuts/pdf/NEW_texturing201.pdf

Enjoy

Crow

working through the barrier of different max versions makes it near impossible to understand what that first tutorial is talking!! its just plain weird!
e.g.

shininess is not on max 6 though i think i found it!

    an this:
    Quote:
click the Sub-Object button under the modifier panel, rotate the gizmo -90 degrees on the Z axis in the bottom viewport. Use the Scale and Move tools to center and fit the gizmo to the nacelle

how do i rotate!!!! AAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! i'll never learn to texture!!!

Would anyone be terribly bothered if I wrote up a new tutorial for Aztecing? The Sci-Fi Art one is a little outdated, and blaXXer introduced me to another aztecing method. I'm not exactly sticking to both of them, but am using elements of both, and if it works out, I'd like to write up a new tutorials for beginners.

Okay. Well, the process needs a little refinement first. Once I've done that, then I'll type up a tutorial on here with pics and such. Hopefully BCU will have fixed the picture posting bug that crept up a few days ago.
