If a torpedo script calls for a Targa that you don't have and you fire that torpedo when in-game, will it cause the game to crash?

correct, if the torp script calls a tga file that is not there, it will be a box of whatever color the missing tga should be

That if the error is in the texture, but if the error is in the script, it will certainly crash.
BTW, I made a retexture of the plasma torpedoes, and now the flares are completely white....
I also noticed (in another torpedo) that the flare is the same texture in the core, no matter what texture I use in the flare....
In both cases I created the three needed textures, including alpha channels and torpedo colours...
