          | Ok, here are the current proposals. Right now we are mainly looking at two options..
 1) SMF with a conversion of the current post tables to SMF format so they can be imported. A similar theme would be used.

 2) fresh and current phpBB install with the same theme, but none of the mods. It would be a vanilla install.

The other option is to go with another forum type, but the top two are preferred. Let me know what you think.

I will need someone to assist wth setting up a test forum somewhere so we can test the clean build.

          | Ok. Just keep in mind, might be difficult to convert the tables in the database to SMF...otherwise we would lose all of the prior posts.

          | Not a massive loss, although some of the old mod threads are good. I'd like some of the RPG stuff saved but I've backed that thread into a word file anyway.

          | Although, some mods that were only released in threads here would be lost if you delete these forums and create a new one.

          | I don't think there's any reason to delete these forums. Lock them down to posting and new registrations and keep them online as a public archive.

          | SMF is awfully shiny
As for transfering posts over, it's not exactly a serious problem. I like RC's idea and failing that there's always cut and paste :p

          | Depending on whether it's worth keeping them, it'll still cost to host and have bandwidth dedicated to it, but if we were to divert to a new forum and disable user account creation and posting (to cement the site as "archives"), surely the people bhind the advertisement revenue that helps pay for it would be a bit miffed. (Noting that I have never dealt with this side or any form of hosting, plus, I'm just assuming we'd deactivate the forums. I'm just guessing).

          | Well, I want to keep the current posts and the user base, save the bots and zero posters. If we switch over to SMF, it would have to be a solid post transfer to the new forum.

          | If you need any help regarding SMF, just ask. I'm pretty much maintaining the BCS's SMF board. It's quite cool and safe.
We've had a lot of hits last month (stats show over 1 000 000 hits) and no problems.

          | Excuse the n00bishness (i've never been able to shake it all off)
But do we need to change the boards in such a drastic manner?

What would the possible benefits and possible downsides be?

And what could go wrong (thinking worst case scenario lads)

 Just my 2 pence.

Well, the main benefit would be better security, and the lack of bugs.

The site woudl still be essentially the same.

          | ah, ok. well, you're the one running the show mate, so it's up to you. But to be honest as long as the site runs quickly enough and is reliable I couldn't really give a toss.
 No offence.

 I didn't do it
If we don't learn from our Mistakes, we will surely repeat them.
It is all the little details, that cause headaches.
According to the way society is going, I'll need a college Degree just to change a light bulb

          | semi related... I had a phpBB board for a Role play and recently switched to a SMF board (we had some security issues with the phpBB and we had no issues with it. So based on the expirence I had I would say SMF is the way to go

          | We'd probably clean up the forum, deleting some topic which aren't useful; it'd only use up space. I haven't heard from Raven what his strategy will be, though.

          | This maybe late but if I were you I would stick to phpBB or maybe get the fully modded version which has better security features.I would maybe add a couple of themes though.
There are certian thingsSMF can't do.These boards maybe pain to update but one it is done it is done.

I am just glad you haven't thought of vb.
