I have been following the progress of BC2 on this board for a couple weeks now, but have only yet to register so I can post. I've seen alot of talk on the mod, and I think its a wonderful thing, but I see there are some things that haven't really been touched, and it all regards the multiplayer capability.
I am an AVID RPG player, and I like the interaction style games most. But we all know whats going to happen, or we should. People play the campaign , beat it, and then set it aside. I've done it millions of times.
What I would like to see in the multiplayer portion of the game is a "Birth Of The Federation" Style game (I have no clue whatsoever how it would be done. I'm sure I could figure it out, but haven't started to yet.) Where you would have empire heads, Flag Officers, Fleet Commanders, Ship Captains, etc.. to create a form of "Fleet Combat" Scenario, other than pvpvpvpvpvpvpvp etc.. And make it a RPG style, with rank advancements, resource limitations, so each empire couldn't make infinity to the gazillionth power ships, etc.. I dunno, maybe I'm not being real here, but I come from a long line of MUD style Star Trek Games, and I think that a multiplayer environment such as that would be the icing on the cake, as it were.
*Shrug.. I could be wrong?*

that would probably result in source code changing of some sort, and i think atp: dimensions is doing something like that....

I dont think so, there will be enough missions for 100 hours including variable continuation of your mission path. In my eyes thats enough to explore for a long time.

Side note, there's (At least, this was said earlier somewhere) going to be at least four different endings, multiple plot branches etc. As usual, don't quote me on this please, just what I think I heard . . .
There are going to be more MP options, but I don't think something like what was proposed is possible. Sounds like you'd need either a LOT of scripting, or some illegal work, the first is plausible, the second is not.

well, im not staff, but im quite familiar with copyright.
Were the mod to say, i dunno, use data in it, or riker, and have them smoke cigars and beat women in leather around the bridge, this would be considered deformation of proprietary characters owned by paramount.
now i doubt this would have happened anyway.
alas.
but the same logic goes for ships. its not like they can do anything out of character but at the same time they fall under the same copyright laws.
also, by using custom ships (which ive seen and think rock, esp the scorpion) they make it much much easier to get permission to set in the trek universe, and at the same time, since its not incringing on any major strk dogma, open up the possibility of future distribution.
that, and designing starships is FUN!
also, its not like you cant just transfer all the canon ship files into it when you get it. And on that very basis you would think the argument is moot.
but having seen a mod killed by copyright infringment, it is something to be taken seriously.

I think we just want to take it (the whole star trek universe) in a new direction without interfering with it's past, which was the problem with Enterprise for most avid fans.
Essentially, the only thing we are changing is the Utpoian ideal. The BCII universe is quite war-torn, its set at a time when half the galaxy has just been torn apart by war, just to be thrown into another one. The humans are meaner and less passive in this. Whether people will accept it is a different question.

heres one .... how will cannon ships get into the mod?
will there be some sort of guidelines for outside modders to use?
and will the weapons be standardized like say type 7 phasors do 20 pts of damage and say type 9 will do 35 ... etc..?
that wouold be nice so there would be more consistancy in 3rd party ships. just a thought

There will be NO canon ship sin the mod, due to copyright issues.
Guidelines? Can you specify please?
Certain weapons will do different damages, yes. I don't know exactly what you mean, it's in the future, so they'll be more powerful, I imagine.
Consistency, you mean one scout, one BB etc?

he meant that people will add their own canon ships in, and whether there will be a balancing guideline so that the 3rd party added canon ships matched the nightsoft products. i never understood how n/s proposed to stop people adding the canon ships or whether they would care if people did anyway.

Officially, if people do not modifiy this mod to thier liking, I will mail them rotten apples.
Seriously, the end user is welcome to modify the mod in any way they see fit. The whole intent of the setup is to make it easy to do so.
Cannon ships cannot be included because of an agreement to leave them out that was entered into some time ago. We cannot violate that agreement. I can't share the details with you, but suffice to say that it is not negotiable. What end users do is up to them.

to clearify i meant ... lets say that a galaxy class starship uses type X phasers and that a ship in the BC2 mod has the same type of phasers that they will cause the same damage without having to edit the numbers in the script. if i made a ship for the mod instead of looking up the damage and all that stuff i would put type X or something like that. then all the wapons in the game would be standardized. that way if a ship was made and added and it said in the description that is was a galaxy type design the weapons would match.
so i guess what i am asking in a clunky kinda way is will there be a master weapons script and all the ships pick form that to make it all balanced.
also in this instance if someone wanted to add the cannon ships they could mod them up for BC2 (i know why they can't be in the mod but that dosent mean that it can't be done by someone else with the balanceing already in the game). and any future ships that can be added will be more consistant.
I hope this explains what i mean better

I see what you are saying. We are developing BC2 to be consistant within itself....but I cannot speak for others. Whether or not they comply with the ruleset is up to them.

Because the people who make commercial-quality game engines need money to feed their families, perhaps?

Can anyone please update us on the current status of BC2?
And can you also give is a percentage of how complete it is? I'm not asking for a release date, just and update.

Progress has slowed recently since Nightsoft got hit hard in the balls by the hurricanes and gamespy went bottom up. Since then we've not picked back up to full pace so its hard to tell when everything will be done.
You can flick through a few threads should give you an idea of whats going on at the moment. Ships are mostly modelled and we have the new systems working at least.

hold on now, if BC2 is suppsosed to be a mod that sits on top of BC1, then would it not be true that you don't have to exclude the original ships? i mean the 'agreement' would stipulate that you can't include cannon ships in the mod, but does it say you must exclude them as well? i could be wrong though i'm still 2 years back in the posts and this text on black makes my eyes hurt with my sorry old CRT that shakes apart going past 60hz

Target looks like 2 GB including models. A fresh install will be required to play the mod.

Better build a new game. It will be smaller. I don't want to spend a year downloading it. And other game requirements are huge, too.
