The judging continues...
Deliberations continue in the mapping contest, as the choices are varied and powerful in different areas. Expect the decision on Friday.

Another contest entry released
You might have noticed this already on the files page, but if not, here you go (Update I've added AmranX's also): The top file has been archived using WinRar, so if necessary you can download the shareware application to extract it here.

Vote in Game of the Year poll
Those of you enamored with Undying now have the chance to speak your mind... VoodooExtreme is asking their readers what game they think should be Game of the Year, and one of the choices is Undying. Speak your mind!

Two New Maps
The clouds break briefly and a lone sunbeam shines down upon the shore of the Isle of Standing Stones. In the light are illuminated two new maps!

Contest Over, Judging Begins
The river that is time has washed past the deadline for entries, and now the keeper takes his place and begins his deliberations. The announcement will come next week, as the entries are played and weighed, but the real winner will be the community. More maps will be provided before then, so watch for the news.

Contest Ends Tonight
This is it, the last day in our month long Undying Editing Contest. We've had four submissions so far, three of which you can already download. Will there be any more?

The exact ending of the contest, for those of you waiting until the last second, will be midnight tonight (the 15th). To know when this is, you can go to TimeZoneConverter and use the pull-down menu for America/Phoenix. Click the question mark, and it'll tell you what time it is here.

Contest Entry #3, ready to play!
Gather your steely knives and feast, my friends, on a meal fit for a king. Benjamin "Hobbes" Hardin has released his entry into the mapping competition, Corrupted. Witness the hidden power and talent of this previously unknown adept, as he places himself firmly in line for one of the prize positions.

Undying Kingdom gone
Bow your heads as we lower the casket into the ground... today marks the sad passing of an important part of the Undying Community history. Undying Kingdom, the only other actual fansite besides Standing Stones, is now gone. On behalf of everyone ever entertained, informed, or helped by the great site content, I'd like to extend thanks to Filth for his fine work and dedication.

Contest Ends This Wednesday!
Four days left, two submissions in... Remember, like the rules say, the 15th is the day. Map like the wind, and best of luck to all.

Second Contest Entry released
Another brave soul has stepped forward and offered his contest entry for all to play. Truly a tremendous effort, with all manner of scripted scenes, journal entries, and great spaces, EddX offers up The Storm Breaks.

Undying Realms Screenshots/Alpha Releases!
I'm sure you know of our hosted site, Undying Realms, who seek to recreate Realms of the Haunting. It's a pleasure to announce that they have released two maps, Chapters 1 and 2, in alpha form! See their main page for the maps. Also be sure to hit that page and check out the newest batch of screenshots.

Work-in-progress image
A newcomer to world creation, noir, sent in the following lone image to show off his progress. Kudos to those choosing the path of map creation... as Kenn Hoekstra once told me, "p.s. Welcome To Hell"

Keebler Speaks
Like a dread incantation from one of the many books in Crowley's libram, simply breathing the words 'particle system' can make Keebler appear instantaneously. A forum reader found this to be true recently. Here's part of Keebler's lengthy reply:
As for my Particle system documentation being "Nothing"... What's the old expression, "Don't bite the hand that feeds you?" :)
The Standing Stones keeper returns
So it happens that even chains of servitude can be slipped off, from time to time. Fortune smiled on me recently, and allowed a precious few days of relief from the bondage that can be site maintenance. Now I am back, enslaved again but yet emboldened to continue with my endless task.

First contest entry... released!
Something has taken hold of Blu3funk... something that drives him to feverishly map, regardless of the toll it takes on his health and sanity. This unseen power in fact forced him to create an entire level in a week. Feast upon Lunacy, Blu3funk's seven-day masterpiece and the first entry into Standing Stones' mapping contest. With scripted events, cutscenes, and journal entries galore, the Undying community should consider the gauntlet thrown.

Will you take it up? CAN you take it up?

Image of Hellraiser
Included in the map described above is a teaser image, showcasing some tantalizing hints about Blu3funk's upcoming Hellraiser-themed map pack. Click on the thumbnail for a large shot.

Upcoming map screenshots
Not even marketplace demons or dusty, deserted Undying fansites are enough to keep hearty mappers away from the game, as we have gotten new images of a level-in-progress. Breathe the anticipation deep into your lungs, and then exhale out towards these pictures from Edward McRobbie.

Mac Undying Interview
Mark Adams, leader of the cabal known as Westlake Interactive, was kind enough to answer a few questions about the Macintosh port of Undying that his company is preparing.
With our previous experience on Unreal games, when we heard about Undying we immediately asked Aspyr to look into it. They were able to get an early build of the game, and we played it for a while and were very impressed.

Narrator Script docs from EALA
The wizened and kindly Keebler has delivered a new spell scroll to the Undying community. It is entitled AI Scripting (formerly AI Dialog Scripting), and was written by Michael Goodwin (who wrote the actual Narrator Script system).

Keebler says:
Here's some documentation on the Narrator Script system from Michael Goodwin, the guy who wrote it. Using this in combination with some of the Undying cutscenes should help you figure it out quicker.

New Undying Realms images
Work continues at a frantic pace over at hosted site Undying Realms, the conversion project to recreate Realms of the Haunting. A quick blast from the Stone reveals an update and new screenshots:

Entering the Catacombes Under attack in the Catacombes

Old news archived
Brevity leads to clarity, and so the old entries have been put away into the mausoleum. Slide out this drawer to commune with the past.

Keebler on the forums
Even the contemplation of space and time allows for the occasional break to check in on apprentices, and Keebler has done just that recently. What follows is a list of his appearances:

On editing questions
If you guys get stuck on problems like these, email me and I'll see if I can ask the appropriate person from the Undying team...

rbenson@earthlink.net

On helping the community
I'll try to help guys out as much as possible....

On starting off loaded with weapons
The bad news is that the WeaponSetup doesn't get triggered unless you explicitly type SetupInv in the console....

If you email me, I'll try and remember to ask around at work to see if there is another way to setup weapons with the current game. Otherwise, we could write something for your specific needs.

On getting players to pick up items
There was something we wrote for Undying that forces an object to touch the player so he picks it up... Email me if you still need help and I'll look around to try and find what that was

Map names
There is a weird bug in the Unreal engine where you can't have a map that uses the same name as any texture/sound package. This is due to the way that Unreal treats all packages the same to a degree. So if your map is named Keeb01.sac and you have a Keeb01.utx, that will cause a problem.

Could that be it? Is your map named the same as any other sound or texture package in Undying's folders ?

AND

As much as I say to not use Unded2, it does have the ability to autosave maps every N minutes. It's somewhere in the Preferences | Editor section.. You have to set the AutoSave to true and set the appropriate delay

Regarding importing models
I'll ask around at work.. We did use propietary tools.

About Undying IRCing
I've never seen anyone there. Can we plan some chat times?

If anyone plans to meet me there, please leave a message here.

Techie stuff
As Unreal was originally an all software engine, it transforms all the vertices to screen space on the CPU. So regardless of your video card or the API you use, it will not use hardware T&L. The Warfare engine used for Unreal 2, etc will have T&L support and many of the new DX8 features.

the Undying Particle engine
FYI, the effect for the ether trap is using an obscure feature of the Undying Particle System :) Weird, eh ? Ok, I'll stop patting myself on the back.

New Undying Wallpaper pack
It turns out Aaron is not the only artistic one in the family, as Mridalmn has appeared again to deliver more of his ghastly visions. This time it is a new wallpaper pack, full of images fit for the South Wing of Covenant Manor, or even your desktop. You can also visit Mridalmn's studio here.

Undying Realms now Hosted
Standing Stones welcomes it's first sibling to the family... Undying Realms, an Undying conversion seeking to replicate the game The Realms Of The Haunting, has moved over to be hosted with us. Here's a description from their page:
The untimely death of his father leads Adam Randall to the Cornish village of Helston and a remote and seemingly desolate country home. Unknown to him he has entered the epicenter of the battle between dark and light fought throughout the millenia and found the solution to his nightmares.

As Adam Randall you are propelled into a vast and intricate first person 3D World, with more than your fair share of demons, weapons and landscapes to travel with plenty of absorbing cut-scenes containing clues & objectives.

Throughout this epic adventure you will be capivated by Undying Realm's dark domain and the belief that the machinations of an age-old French sorcerer can really plunge the World into a new age of darkness.

More glimpses into the depths...
As the planes migrate and reality swirls, mankind occasionally is given a glimpse into the depths of the other side. Two such rifts have opened today, exposing the worlds in progress by Osiris (click here) and Bluefunk (click here)

Tutorials Redux
Master Osiris has been watching the ebb and flow of the ether, and made a few changes accordingly to his guides on creating Journal Entries and implementing the Scrye effect. Acolytes take note.

Unreal Editing Resources
Bluefunk recently raised his arms above his head, uttered several dread and incomprehensible incantations, and summoned this list of useful links to Unreal editing resources. Newcomers to the world of Undying mapping should find the list useful.

The Secret of Scrye v2.0
Aaron's ghostly form appeared to me late last night, cackling with glee and flying around the room. As he left he dropped a letter, snidely implying that Keebler had something to say and would be best off delivering his own messages from now on...

Hey, just a reminder dealing with your recent piece on Scrying.
There is a flag that will make other things show up or be audible when the player is Scrying. It's the bScryeOnly flag. If you set it to true for an object with an ambient sound, you won't hear it till you Scrye. If you set it to true for a visible object, you won't see it until you Scrye.

The bScryeOnly flag is under the Display category for any object that is an Actor.

Also, there are flags that you can pass to the PlaySound call in Script. You'll notice that one of them is SOUND_SCRYEONLY. This will allow you to make sounds played from script ScryeOnly as well

// This is from the top of Actor.uc

// Flags for sound properties
const SOUND_LOCKED = 0x0001;
const SOUND_NOPAUSE = 0x0002;
const SOUND_AMBIENT = 0x0004; // INTERNAL USE ONLY: DO NOT USE !!!!!!!!!!
const SOUND_BACKGROUND = 0x0008;
const SOUND_VOICEOVER = 0x0010;
const SOUND_NOSCRYEPITCH = 0x0020;
const SOUND_NOSCRYEVOLUME = 0x0040;
const SOUND_NOWATERPITCH = 0x0080;
const SOUND_NOWATERVOLUME = 0x0100;
const SOUND_SCRYEONLY = 0x0200;
const SOUND_MUSICINTRO = 0x0400;
const SOUND_NOFALLOFF = 0x0800;
const SOUND_NOPANNING = 0x1000;

Keebler

Keebler on the forums
The mighty Keebler, programmer on Undying and all-seeing warlock, recently visited several of the Undying community messageboards to answer various questions. Here is a summary:

Keebler on Unded
FYI, Unded.exe ( the VB editor ) was used almost exclusively for Undying's development.
Keebler on this user's Undying love story
Sweet !
Keebler on the scrye effect
Don't forget the bScryeOnly flag under the Display category. Set it on an ambientsound and you'll only hear it when you scrye. Set it on a visible object and you'll only see it when you scrye.

Also, if you look at the top of Actor.uc, there are flags for the PlaySound() call. One of them is SOUND_SCRYEONLY. That way you can have specific oneshot sounds that are ScryeOnly
Keebler on demo troubles
It's doubtful the version on the EA site is bad because they would get complaints and repost a good one. Probably just an error with your download. Just cause the byte count is correct doesn't mean it's not corrupt.....
Keebler on Journal Entries
If you look through the journal entries in Aeons.int, you'll see that there are a couple tokens you can add as well.

&n forces a new line
&i imagepath &i will insert a texture so you can have pictures in your journal entries.

I'm rambling, but don't forget the bShowImmediate which can force the book to be opened when a journal is picked up
Keebler on adding mirrors to maps
We may have not setup the flags correctly in Unded2.

The Secret of Scrye
One more piece of the puzzle that is the scrye effect has been found... intrepid arcanist Osiris has torn a page from his spellbook to share with the rest of the editing magi. This note details how to add the scrye effect to new worlds.

Occult editing arcana
Greetings... the observant visitor to Standing Stones might have noticed the green glow of their Gel'ziabar stone, indicating something of note. A new page has been added to the editing libram, in the form of this tutorial on adding Journal Entries. Look around...

Standing Stones: revived!
Well, hell, who woulda thought that there was going to be an Undying community! But sure enough, just when I gave up and made this site an info-only resource, people started sprouting up with their user maps and forum posts. So I've decided to reanimate Standing Stones and start doing news, and maybe even some feature content. Oh wait, I was already doing feature content! Check out the news updates below for some neato stuff, and stay tuned for (hopefully) more good stuff in the future.

Unding port for Mac announced
Aw yeah, looks like Westlake Interactive's great work with such superb ports as Deus Ex didn't go unnoticed... It was just announced yesterday that Westlake will be working on porting Undying over to the Mac. All you Mac people buy 200K copies so us PC h00rs can get our sequel :)

Since the Mac port has been announced, we've put up an Undying Macintosh section here to try and track whatever information we can get.

Unding Realms project announced
Spotted a post in our forums from someone named Daemonica that he and ArcAngel are working on a singleplayer mission (map pack, mod, six pack... what the hell should we call Undying projects?). It's called Undying Realms, and they intend to recreate the game called Realms of the Haunting. Sounds way cool, so go check out the nice site and awesome screenshots.

Second sound set for Undying theme
Mridalmn continues to kick ass, this time around with a second comlete set of sounds for the Undying theme pack he created. Make sure to visit his Undying page for his themes and cool wallpapers.

Screens from upcoming level by Osiris
Yup, got some serious yummy goodness in the form of ten screenshots from an upcoming Undying Community singleplayer level by the mighty Osiris. Check out the man's great geometry and what looks to be some cool work with the particle engine.

Screens from Bluefunk's Undying map set
Can you feel the pain? Well, maybe 12 nice shots from bluefunk's map pack in progress will help... what, is that a working Hellraiser cube I see? And is that an obelisk similar to the one in Hellraiser 2 I see? I think you better get on over there and check em out for yourself.
