SNK Gals' Fighters review by Jeurja
When I first heard about this game, I thought to myself "Awwww yeeeeaaaaah." Finally, my dirty fantasies about the SNK gals would be played out once and for all. Much to my chagrin, I did not hear the thumpin' bass of porno music nor did I see any lesbian antics when I first powered up Gals Fighters in my NGPC. Cat fights, indeed. Hmph. But, despite my initial disappointment, I love Gals Fighters to death. If it wasn't for the fact that MotM has a better overall roster of characters, tag team fighting, and a ton of minigames and options, I'd be hailing Gals Fighters as the "NUMBAH ONE!" NGPC fighter of all time. Still, it's a damn close second.
Gameplay
Call me crazy, but I feel this game controls best of all the NGPC
fighters, MotM included. It obviously uses the
same engine that was used in just about every NGPC fighting game (excluding
Samurai Shodown!, Last Blade, and
Rockman), but perhaps tweaked a little bit. Gals Fighters is a bit "wackier"
than KoF and MotM and the engine seems to
allow for this. Or maybe it's my overactive imagination toying with me
again. At any rate, Gals Fighters has control that is far
beyond what most would expect on a handheld fighter.
Graphics
I think the graphics are downright superb. From the nifty
happenings in the background to the fluid character
animations, everything screams quality. While the majority of sprites are
lifted from previous NGPC fighters, many frames of
"goofy" moves are added, and some characters are new or redrawn altoghter.
Also, either my eyes are deceiving me or
this game scrolls smoother than anything else on NGPC; it is CLEAR, baby!
It's obvious that a lot of time and effort went into
this on Yumekobo's part.
Sound
I love this music. It's all original. It's all catchy. It's all good.
Great, great stuff! Yumekobo really became the best
developer from SNK's pool of talent, in my opinion. Puzzle Link 2, Kikouseki
Unitron, etc....all solid! And they did a great
job composing tunes for Gals Fighters. You go, Yumekobo! As for sound
effects, well, they get the job done. No complaints,
but no praises either.
Overall
I adore Gals Fighters. It's got a special place in my heart. In
fact, shhhh, don't tell anyone, but it might be my favorite
fighting game on the NGPC. But don't say that too loud, for we don't want to
hurt MotM's feelings. :)
This game has been recently rereleased (in Japan), by the way...why don't
you go order it? Unless you're one of those people
that must have a 100% serious fighter, you will love Gals Fighters.
Definitely in the top 10 of fighting games of all time in my
book...
It's just too bad there was no "extra action" for perverts like me. Ah well,
at least I still have Super Real Mahjong. ;)
