-------------------------------------------------------- Secret of Mana (Seiken Densetsu 2) Bosses Guide & Strategies version 1.0 by Mike Slayton (a.k.a. Beastly) -------------------------------------------------------- ============ Outline ============ A. Intro B. Copyright Stuff C. About this boss guide D. Boss List, Strategy and Guides E. Credits F. E-Mail info ========= A. Intro ========= Well, I will admit, I have always been a fan of Secret of Mana; I've had the game since I was seven years of age. I love this game - still do to this day. I know a lot about it, and I wanted to write this FAQ for those who need some strategy on the many bosses in this spectacular game. Even though this is my very first FAQ, I will attempt to cover everything I intend to cover in this FAQ as fully detailed as possible. Please, if there are any comments, concerns, questions, or whatever, don't be afraid to e-mail me (my address is located in the copyrights section and at the very bottom of the FAQ. Thank you very much. ================== B. Copyright Stuff ================== This FAQ is copyright 2003 Mike Slayton (a.k.a. Beastly) This is for personal use only and should not be reproduced without my permission. This FAQ was entirely written by me, so therefore if you'd like to use this on your site, I would appreciate it if you e-mail me at lilbeastomega@yahoo.com with info. Thank you. ======================== C. About this boss guide ======================== Ok, this particular boss guide will be written in a way that you can totally understand, so there should be no problems with it. Also, I will refer to the character's actual names. The boy will be Randi, the girl as Purim, and the sprite as Popoi. The guide will look like below: Boss Name Location HP, MP, EXP, GP, prizes Weakness (if any) Any special attacks/spells the boss uses Difficulty (I'll use a 1-10 system; 1 is pathetically easy, while 10 is hard) Preparation/Required level The actual strategy for beating the boss ...in that order. I will try to explain in as much detail as I can. Like I said before, this is my very first FAQ, so don't be too rough on me...:) ================================= D. Bosses List, Strategy & Guides ================================= I believe there are 40 bosses in total to defeat in Secret of Mana...each of them will be explained below. Remember the difficulty system is from 1 which is pathetically easy, to 10, which is hard. ======================= 1. Mantis Ant (insect) ======================= Location: Underneath Potos Village HP: 150, MP: 20, EXP given: 10, GP given: 100, Prize: Sword's Orb Attacks: Acid Breath, Gem Missile Difficulty: 1 Preparation: Take some time to build Randi (the boy) up to at least level 3. You can take the extreme route and build him to as high as 5, but it is really not recommended. At level 3, Randi has 69 HP, which is enough to take on the Mantis Ant with little to no trouble at all. Make sure you buy the Bandanna from the item shop. Strategy: This is the easiest boss in the game, seriously. If you have the bandanna equipped, you shouldn't take any damage at all from his Acid Breath attack. He does possess a Level 0 Gem Missile, which will do somewhere around 10-20 damage, so watch out for that. If the Rusty Sword is level 1 (and it should be), you can just charge up to level 1 and let the boss have it. Keep attacking and he'll be dust before you know it. IF you should happen to die, you will be revived, so don't worry about dying here. If you die here, I'd have to hurt you seriously...lol. ===================== 2. Tropicallo (plant) ===================== Location: Dwarf Village HP: 350, MP: 0, EXP Given: 80, GP Given: 132, Prizes: Spear's Orb Attacks: Pumpkin Bombs, Brambler Difficulty: 2 Preparation: First off, you can either battle Tropicallo alone with Randi, or you can have Purim (the girl) as an ally. If you are alone, have Watts forge your sword to the Broad Sword, then go fight in Gaia's Navel until it reaches level 2. Randi should be wearing Spiky Suit, Head Gear, and a Power Wrist, and should be at least level 8 (he'll have 117 HP by this point). If you have Purim with you, she should be at least level 7, and be equipped with Chain Vest, Hair Ribbon, and a Power Wrist. IMO, she really doesn't help out much, since Tropicallo is enclosed within the spike walls, and won't directly attack him. She's just bait for the pumpkin bombs. If you prepared correctly, pumpkin bombs should not damage you at all. Strategy: Tropicallo will appear in one of three places: On the left, in the center, or on the right side of the spike wall. When he appears, he will usually spit out a pumpkin bomb. It will bounce around and explode eventually, and will cause damage to you if you should happen to be hit by it. You will be better off alone as Randi, than to have Purim with you, but it is your choice. Charge your sword to level 2 when Tropicallo is in the ground, then when he comes out, let him have it! Each attack should do roughly 70 damage (give or take) to the boss. He only has 350 HP, so if you keep this tactic up, he will eventually fall. He also summons a vine-like Brambler to help him - one power attack will take it out. ======================== 3. Spiky Tiger (animal) ======================== Location: Elinee's Castle HP: 520, MP: 21, EXP given: 210, GP given: 288, Prizes: Boomerang's Orb Attacks: Bite, Rolling Jump Attack, Crazy Spinning Attack, Fire Breath, Fire Bouquet Difficulty: 7 Preparation: Make sure that Randi, Purim, and Popoi are no lower than level 10. This can be considered a hard fight. Stock up on Candies, Chocolates, Cups of Wishes, and Royal Jams, if you can afford them. Randi should still be wearing the Spiky Suit, Head Gear, and Power Wrist. Purim should have the Kung Fu Dress, Hair Ribbon, and Power Wrist. Popoi should be using Spiky Suit, Rabite Cap, and a Power Wrist. Also, you should give at least one character a long range weapon, like the Bow/Arrow, or the Boomerang. Strategy: Spiky is one tough customer indeed. He has a weakness, but you don't have magic at this point in the game, so it's useless to exploit it. But anyway, Spiky Tiger has several attacks at his disposal. He has a bite attack, which does moderate damage. He also has a rolling jump attack in which he jumps into the air and comes crashing down on a character, which will paralyze him or her. His spinning crazy attack I like to call it, can also paralyze characters, so be cautious. He will also, from time to time, jump onto one of the two high perches and breathe fire, which will engulf a character in flames, and thus they take damage as if he/she was poisoned. Very dangerous. Last attack he has is a level 2 Fire Bouquet, which damages and lowers a character's attack power. Nasty, isn't he? Here's how to beat him. When he is at close range, give him all you've got with charged up weapon attacks - hopefully Randi is using either a level 2 sword or spear. Remember to use healing items if anyone gets low on HP. If Spiky is on one of the top perches, melee weapons (swords, spears, etc.) cannot hurt him. Instead, switch to a bow/arrow or boomerang and attack him that way. Don't give up; this can be a hard fight...especially if you aren't a high level. This fight is one of the few "hard" fights in the entire game. ================================= 4. Tonpole/Biting Lizard (reptile) ================================= Location: Cave of Undine HP: 770, MP: 6, EXP given: 210, GP given: 348, Prizes: Glove's Orb Attacks: Tongue, Cure Water Difficulty: 3 Preparation: If your item reserves are low from the Spiky Tiger fight, go visit Neko and refill them first. This is your last battle in which you don't have magic - all battles from this point on, you will have the help of magic spells. A required level of 11 is advised - 14 if you want to go to extremes, Iffishes give great EXP at this point in the game. :) Strategy: Tonpole (the pink lizard) doesn't pose much of a threat, all it does is jump around. But, you can take damage if you are very close to it, so keep your distance. Wail at him with power attacks until he changes into the blue lizard. Biting Lizard is the hard part of the fight. Now, he will attempt to swallow any character that gets in his way. To release a character from his mouth, just smack him once, and he/she will be free, but will take some good damage, too. Keep attacking him. Later, he starts to cast a level 3 Cure Water spell, which will heal him roughly 130-180 HP...but he only has 6 MP, and Cure Water takes 2 MP to cast, which gives him 3 Cure Waters to use. When he's out of MP, keep wailing on him until he falls. You receive a Glove's Orb after winning the battle, as well as Undine's power and the Pole Dart. ===================== 5. Fire Gigas (spirit) ===================== Location: Underground Palace HP: 850, MP: 66, EXP given: 326, GP given: 360, Prizes: Axe's Orb, Weakness: Water Attacks: Fire Breath, Fireball, Lava Wave, Exploder Difficulty: 4 Preparation: Now, that you have some magic, it's time to use it! First, before even going into the Underground Palace, take some time to level Undine to level 1. Also, upgrade any weapons you may have orbs for and level your characters to at least level 13. If Popoi's Undine is level 1, this battle should be a breeze. Don't forget to buy Faerie Walnuts!! Have Faerie Walnuts in your inventory from this point on! Strategy: Fire Gigas's favorite element is...well, fire! He does have some pretty high level spells (at least for YOUR level), including level 4 Fireball, Lava Wave and Exploder. If you stand directly in front of him, and he pounds the ground, expect a party-wide Exploder spell about a second later. So in other words, stay away from him. He'll still cast Lava Wave, Fireball and breathe Fire Breath, but you'll take less damage from those spells (not much, though - they ARE level 4, you know.) When your party gets low on HP, have Purim cast her level 1 Cure Water (party-wide, it'll heal around 150 HP, on one person, it will heal nearly 350 HP.) Have Popoi use Freeze or Energy Absorb to quickly dispatch the Fire Gigas - IMO, I use Energy Absorb to keep Popoi's health up, but it's entirely up to you, Freeze will smack him for almost 250-300 damage a spell. Your reward a Mana Seed and Gnome's magic. ======================== 6. Chamber's Wall (demon) ======================== Location: Pandora Ruins HP: 920, MP: 99, EXP given: 580, GP given: 720, Prizes: Bow's Orb, Weakness: I strongly believe it is light, but you don't have Lumina, so it'll have to be Earth magic. Attacks: Cure Water, Freeze, Energy Absorb, Revivifier (level 3) Difficulty: 3 Preparation: Ok, I strongly suggest having your characters at or above 13 for this boss. You should also level BOTH Undine and Gnome magic to level 2 for both Purim and Popoi...especially Popoi's. Level 2 Earth Slide will wreck this boss, trust me. Other than that, just make sure you have full supply of items and weapons leveled up. Strategy: You may have noticed the spikes on the wall below. Well, if you kill the two side eyes first, Chamber's Wall will begin to move your party toward the spikes in an attempt to crush them - if they are crushed, it's game over. Chamber's Wall likes Undine magic for some reason, and will constantly cast Freeze and/or Energy Absorb on a team member - keep them healthy by having Purim cast level 2 Cure Water. Keep Randi attacking as usual, and Popoi casting level 2 Earth Slide on the center eye. This will do loads of damage to it, and will kill it very shortly. =================== 7. Kilroy (machine) =================== Location: Scorpion Army's hidden ship HP: 900, MP: 13, EXP given: 686, GP given: 650, Prizes: Javelin's Orb Weakness: None Attacks: Mallet attack, Spinning Mallet, Lunar Boost Difficulty: 3 Preparation: If you went back to Pandora Castle after defeating Chamber's Wall, you can get into the storeroom there and pick up a Sword's Orb, a Spear's Orb, and some gold pieces. Forge your sword and your spear and level them until they reach level 3. The extra damage will help in this next battle. You should also be at least level 14 or higher, as well. Strategy: Kilroy is more annoying than difficult. You might want to have some medical herbs with you, just in case he moogles you. Basically, all this guy does is attempt to attack you with his hammer - once you deal enough damage to him, he'll roll around on a wheel and move faster. Keep moving to stay away from him and to avoid being moogled. Kilroy can also cast a level 1 Lunar Boost, which raises his attack power, but he rarely does, and if he does, it runs out within 15 seconds usually, so you don't have to worry too much about that. He doesn't have any weaknesses, though, so Popoi can cast any spell and still cause the same amount of damage to him. Purim should cast level 2 Cure Water if anyone needs HP, and Randi should attack Kilroy with level 3 sword attacks (these can do over 100 damage at this point in the game.) ======================== 8. Jabberwocky (reptile) ======================== Location: Water Palace HP: 950, MP: 90, EXP given: 800, GP given: 768, Prizes: Bow's Orb Weakness: Fire (but you'll have to use Earth, because he takes little damage from Water) Attacks: Head attack, Poison Breath, Acid Storm, Cure Water Difficulty: 5 Preparation: Make sure your characters are at least level 15 or above, and have all your weapons leveled up. Also, if you bought Cobra Bracelets from Pandora, you won't be poisoned by Jabberwocky's Poison Breath attack. This can be a hard fight if you're not careful. Strategy: If he hits a character with one of his heads, usually the character will end up paralyzed, so watch out for that. His most annoying attack is Poison Breath, which hits everyone, and poisons them. To remove poison, just have Purim cast a multi-target level 2 Remedy. Jabberwocky has a weakness to fire naturally, but unfortunately you don't have fire magic yet. So, Popoi will have to stick to Earth Slide instead. Purim should cast level 2 Cure Water if anyone is low, and Randi should be using a level 3 weapon (either Sword or Spear). BEWARE OF THE BOSS'S ACID STORM SPELL!! This spell will cause a lot of damage, and lower your defenses temporarily. Take your time and you will eventually win. ===================== 9. Spring Beak (bird) ===================== Location: Sprite Village HP: 720, MP: 99, EXP given: 1090, GP given: 864, Prizes: Boomerang's Orb Weakness: Earth Attacks: Balloon, Thunderbolt, Silence, Air Blast Difficulty: 2 Preparation: Although, this battle should be a breeze, so to speak, have your characters at or above level 18. Not much preparation is actually needed for this particular fight. Strategy: All of Spring Beak's spells are multi-target. Silence, will stop a character from casting magic and reverse their controls for a short time, and Balloon is similar to the "Stop" effect in Final Fantasy (for those of you who've played any of the Final Fantasies.) Other than that, be on the lookout for Air Blast or worse, Thunderbolt. Fortunately, all it takes to destroy Spring is three good castings of Popoi's level 2 Earth Slide spell. Pretty easy, if you ask me. :) ========================= 10: Great Viper (reptile) ========================= Location: Tunnels of Matango HP: 1330, MP: 8, EXP given: 1410, GP given: 1056, Prizes: Sword's Orb Weakness: Wind Attacks: Swallow, Gem Missile Difficulty: 4 Preparations: Now, that you have Sylphid magic, take some time to level Popoi's to level 3. You can level up Purim's Sylphid magic, but it's really not needed, unless you are going to use Balloon and/or Thunder Saber. Required level for this fight would be 21 (you should have gained at least two or three levels from the Upperland Forest to this area here.) Also, having the Midge Mallet would be nice, too. ;) Strategy: Great Viper is very mobile, so you might have to chase him down in order to attack him physically. If you get too close to him, he can swallow you, and spit you out tiny! Use the midge mallet (or Remedy/Medical Herbs) to cure this. His other attack is a level 5 Gem Missile, which hurts - he uses this rarely, though. Assault the viper with Popoi's level 3 Thunderbolt spell (you can also use Air Blast, but it will less damage) Heal when and if you get low using Purim's level 3 Cure Water spell. This fight shouldn't last too long. =========================== 11. Mech Rider #1 (machine) =========================== Location: Kakkara Desert HP: 980, MP: 18, EXP given: 1595, GP given: 1055, Prizes: Whip's Orb Weakness: None Attacks: Charge, Multi-Missile, Speed Up Difficulty: 4 Preparation: Since you can choose to go to the Ice Country before going to Kakkara, you may have Salamando magic by this point. It doesn't make a difference though, because Mech Rider has no weaknesses. However, going to the Ice Country first, means you can buy the better armor first, which can help out. No matter though. Just have your elementals at level 3, and your weapons up to date, and your levels at or above 22, and you should be just fine. :) Strategy: Mech Rider is another annoying boss to deal with, since he will keep charging from one side of the battlefield to the other at random. Attacking him causes him to cast level 3 Speed Up on himself (which only raises his agility - nothing important). Basic strategy applies here, have Popoi cast whatever spell he pleases, while Randi (should have a level 4 sword by now) should attack and Purim should cast level 3 Cure Water when necessary. Easy victory, don't you think? =================== Boreal Face (plant) =================== Location: Ice Forest HP: 1100, MP: 12, EXP given: 2245, GP given: 1040, Prizes: Bow's Orb Weakness: Fire (you get fire magic AFTER defeating the boss, sucks, doesn't it?) Attacks: Bramblers, Pumpkin Bombs, Cure Water, Sleep Flower, Burst Difficulty: 4 Preparation: Your characters should be somewhere around level 25 for this fight. Make sure you have bought the latest armor (from either Kakkara Village or Todo Village) and that all weapons are upgraded. Strategy: Boreal Face is a relative of the Tropicallo that you fought in the beginning of the game, only this guy packs a few level 4 spells. Fortunately, he only has 12 MP, so once he's out of MP...he's yours to own with your characters. This also may be the first time you can see Dryad magic at work here, because BF casts level 4 Sleep Flower as well as Burst (which is a powerful tree spell). He also packs level 4 Cure Water. Unfortunately, this battle will take longer than usual because you don't have fire magic, and BF is resistant to Water, Earth and Wind...which means you'll have to rely on weapon attacks to see you through. Also, Bramblers will periodically return to harass you, but you should take no damage from them. Also, watch out for the Pumpkin Bombs. ======================================= 13. Tonpole/Biting Lizard (x3)(reptile) ======================================= Location: Ice Palace HP: 770, MP: 6, EXP given: 210, GP given: 348, Prizes: None, I believe Weakness: Fire Attacks: Tongue, Cure Water Difficulty: 1...lol, you'll see why in a sec :) Preparation: To be honest with you, there is no need for preparation for this fight. Strategy: Remember Tonpole from the Cave of Undine? You'll be fighting three of them this time, and yes you do have fire magic this time around! As long as you have the best armor for this area, nothing can go wrong, as they CANNOT damage you (keep in mind, that they still can swallow you, though.) In fact, you don't really need to waste MP on these guys. Power attacks will take them down soon enough. They do cast level 3 Cure Water, though...so keep attacking them. To be even meaner, have Purim cast level 3 Flame Saber on everyone's weapon to increase the damage done to the bosses. Now you see why the difficulty is a 1? ;) ======================== 14. Frost Gigas (spirit) ======================== Location: Ice Palace HP: 1140, MP: 99, EXP given: 3045, GP given: 1200, Prizes: Boomerang's Orb Weakness: Fire Attacks: Ice Saber, Freeze, Acid Storm, Freeze Breath Difficulty: 5 Preparations: Make sure that both Purim and Popoi's fire magic are level 3 (that is as high as it will go for now. Yes you may have four elementals, but only have the power of three mana seeds.) Also have your characters at or above level 27. Strategy: This boss is similar to the Fire Gigas you fought in the Underground Palace, only this one specializes in water attacks rather than fire. His most annoying attack is his Freeze Breath. What he usually does is materialize, blow Freeze Breath on somebody, and then disappear again (he usually targets Popoi for me.) However, he can also cast level 6 Freeze or Acid Storm. Although, his magic is level 6, you won't take that much damage from it. What's strange is that he will sometimes equip your party with level 6 Ice Sabers! That's a bad thing and a good thing. Bad thing because your weapons will cause less damage to him with Ice Sabers on. Good thing is that if you have Ice Sabers on after the battle, you can use them to frostie any enemies outside, and they last a good while, too. Anyway, when he materializes, have Popoi cast level 3 Exploder or Fireball or Lava Wave (it doesn't matter, but Exploder does more damage.). Purim can also fight back by casting her level 3 Blaze Wall or Fire Bouquet. Randi should just attack. ===================== 15. Minotaur (animal) ===================== Location: Fire Palace HP: 1200, MP: 99, EXP Given: 3348, GP given: 1440, Prizes: Javelin's Orb Weakness: Wind Attacks: Charge attack, Defender, Earth Slide Difficulty: 6 Preparation: Again, make sure Purim's and Popoi's magic are level 3, and weapons are upgraded. By this point you should have every weapon at level 4 except the javelin and the axe. Minotaur can be a nasty customer, so watch yourself. Strategy: Minotaur can be a hard fight, even when you have wind magic. Why? He has an Earth Slide spell. So what, you say? It's also level 7. His Earth Slide hurts like crazy, as it can cause up to 100 points of damage or more to a character. Ouch, you say? Yeah, better say ouch! Fortunately, for you, he doesn't have the HP to back up his nastiness. He'll also cast level 7 Defender, which really does not matter. You'll want to have Purim constantly casting level 3 Cure Water to heal the damage of any Earth Slide spells, and Popoi should be focusing some level 3 Thunderbolts onto Minotaur. A few Thunderbolts will take him out fast. Your real reward is the mana seed of fire. Now you need to spend time to get everything, and I mean everything up to level 4. ======================= 16. Doom's Wall (demon) ======================= Location: Imperial Ruins HP: 1180, MP: 99, EXP given: 4750, GP given: 648, Prizes: Whip's Orb Weakness: Light (again, you'll have to settle for Earth or a different element.) Attacks: Revivifier, Thunderbolt, Energy Absorb, Cave-In (if alone) Difficulty: 5 Preparation: Have your party at or above level 30 for this fight, and make sure every spell you have is at level 4, especially Cure Water, and Popoi's spells. All weapons should be upgraded and practiced with until they reach level 4 as well...although if you'd like, once you get the Bow and Spear and Sword orbs located in the ruins, have Watts forge them to level 5, and work with them until they reach level 5 for the extra damage. Make sure you have all the best armor from Northtown as well. Strategy: Doom's Wall is similar to Chamber's Wall, only more beefier, and with more powerful spells...oh, say level 5. That's nothing compared to what you faced back in the Fire Palace. DW likes to toss Thunderbolts at you, so keep your HP up using Purim's level 4 Cure Water spell. This guy is actually weak against light magic, but you have none, so Popoi will have to stick with another elemental. It doesn't matter which one, as DW will take normal damage from all of them. If DW is alone, he'll start causing Cave-In's which can do some damage. ==================== 17. Vampire (undead) ==================== Location: Imperial Ruins HP: 2550, MP: 99, EXP given: 5148, GP given: 696, Prizes: Boomerang's Orb Weakness: Light (you'll have to use another elemental, though) Attacks: Sleep Ring, Sky pounce, Bite, Energy Absorb, Freeze Difficulty: 4 Preparations: Same as before...Vampire comes immediately after the fight with Doom's Wall. Strategy: As Purim gets revived by her boyfriend Dyluck, Thanatos sends the Vampire to attack you. You should know that undead monsters don't like light. Well, you don't have light magic yet, so again, Popoi will have to stick to other means of magic. Vampire has a lot of HP, so you might be here a while. He also likes to put people to sleep, so beware. Again, Popoi's magic will do normal damage to the Vampire, and Purim should cast level 4 Cure Water if anyone's HP gets low. ================================= 18. Metal Mantis (insect/machine) ================================= Location: Imperial Castle HP: 1220, MP: 40, EXP given: 4749, GP given: 1464, Prizes: Glove's Orb Weakness: None Attacks: Double Claw attack, Laser, Gem Missile, Lunar Boost Difficulty: 4 Preparations: None really needed, but do get your party up to at least level 32 or higher. Strategy: It's the Mantis Ant...only robotic now. Doesn't mean he is exactly ten times harder either, this guy just has more attacks. Do be careful of his level 6 Gem Missile spell and his laser attacks. He also has Lunar Boost which raises his attack power....yawn. Basic strategy applies here - attack him with any spell from Popoi, and heal with Purim if needed. Randi should be doing what else, but using power attacks. Easy victory. =========================== 19. Mech Rider #2 (machine) =========================== Location: Imperial Castle (rooftop) HP: 1258, MP: 30, EXP given: 6013, GP given: 1500, Prizes: Javelin's Orb Weakness: None (again, use any spell you want from Popoi) Attacks: Charge, Missile attacks, Speed Up Difficulty: 3 Preparations: None needed, actually...but have your characters at or above level 33. Strategy: Geshtar the Mech Rider is back, and this fight is no different than the one in Kakkara Desert. Same attacks, same Speed Up spell, only this time he has it at level 5 - like it matters. Basically, just attack him until he dies. You can use anything you like, as the boss has no weaknesses. :) ======================== 20. Lime Slime (morpher) ======================== Location: Palace of Darkness HP: 3470, MP: 99, EXP given: 8000, GP given: 3000, Prizes: Javelin's Orb Weakness: Fire Attacks: Slime Bubble (has various status effects), Dark Force, Evil Gate Dispel Magic Difficulty: 5 Preparations: Ok, there are two ways to prepare for this fight and for the next two boss fights, so read closely: #1. You can either travel to the Palace of Darkness immediately coming from the Empire. In this case, your magic will still be at level 4, and you can have the following equipment on your characters: Magical Armor, Circlet, Ivy Armlet. #2. You can travel here after getting Lumina from the Light Palace in Gold City. In this case, you can have all your spells (especially fire) at level 5, and therefore deal more damage to the boss. Most likely (if you have the GP) you'll be wearing Battle Suits/Flower Suit, Lazuri Rings/Shield Rings, and Dragon Helm/ Duck Helm. This is the strongest armor that you can have up until you finish the Tree Palace. Either way, make sure your characters are no lower than level 36, and have all weapons upgraded (most will likely be level 5 by this point, some may be level 6) and your spells should be either level 4 or 5 - either is fine. Strategy: Lime Slime can be a nuisance. His slime bubble attack will either cause poison, frostie, or engulf. I believe green bubbles cause poison, blue ones cause frostie, and red ones cause engulf, but I have seen them do different things, so keep alert. Other than that, you need to worry about Dark Force and Evil Gate. Don't cast saber magic, as he can cast Dispel Magic to take them right off. If you went to the Light Palace and got Lumina before you came here, Purim's level 5 Lucid Barrier may stop the damage of slime bubbles, but not the status effects. To kill him, have Popoi cast level 4 or level 5 Exploder repeatedly until he is defeated. Purim should use level 4 or level 5 Cure Water if HP is low, and Fire Bouquet to cause some extra fire damage. After defeating Lime Slime, Popoi will receive Shade's magic. ====================== 21. Blue Spike (animal) ====================== Location: Light Palace (2nd floor) HP: 1980, MP: 99, EXP given: 9150, GP given: 3840, Prizes: Bow's Orb Weakness: None Attacks: Bite, Rolling Jump Attack, Crazy Spinning Attack, Fire Bouquet, Fireball Difficulty: 3 Preparations: (See Preparations for boss #20 - Lime Slime, only switch Lumina to Shade.) Strategy: Blue Spike is a relative of Spiky Tiger, only pathetically easy. From his looks, you may think that he has a weakness to fire, but in reality, he has no weakness at all. If your spell levels are 5, kudos to you. It doesn't really matter, as spells don't seem to affect this boss much as with other bosses, although Dark Force MIGHT do a little more damage than the other spells. If your party is equipped with Battle Suits, Lazuri Rings, and Dragon Helm/Duck Helms, then the only thing that you will take damage from is Blue Spike's fire magic. Wail on him with power attacks, and use the same tactic like you did when fighting Spiky Tiger. When he starts to blow, he is faking his death...but when he blows up the second time, he is dead. ======================= 22. Gorgon Bull (animal) ======================= Location: Light Palace (4th floor) HP: 2470, MP: 99, EXP given: 9755, GP given: 4800, Prizes: Boomerang's Orb Weakness: Wind Attacks: Fist Slam, Charge attack, Defender, Earth Slide Difficulty: 4 Preparations: (See Preparations for #20 Lime Slime, only switch Lumina to Shade.) Strategy: This is basically a rematch with Minotaur, only Gorgon Bull has a level 8 Earth Slide! Don't fear...if you bought the armor from Gold City, it will barely scratch you. So, therefore you can bump the difficulty to about 2. His charge attack can paralyze you though, so be careful. Use Popoi's level 4 or level 5 Thunderbolt spell on Gorgon Bull - it does an insane amount of damage. ======================= 23. Dark Stalker (ninja) ======================= Location: Tasnica Castle HP: 510, MP: 60, EXP gained: 1219, GP given: 0, Prizes: Sword's Orb Weakness: Light Attacks: Acid Storm, Ice Saber, Dispel Magic Difficulty: 1 (I'd like to give it a negative difficulty - this guy is SOOOO easy) Preparations: Not even going to waste my time...this guy is pathetically easy to beat! Strategy: Purim's your girl of choice for this fight. Make sure her light magic is at level 7, and have her cast Lucent Beam and the fight's over. You win. You will fight Dark Stalkers as normal enemies soon enough...so no, you have not seen the last of him...mwahaha! :) ================================= 24. Shadows 1, 2, and 3 (spirits) ================================= Location: Cavern of the Test of Courage HP: Randi(999), Purim & Popoi (800), MP: 0, EXP given: 0, GP given: 0 Prizes: None Weakness: None Attacks: Power attacks, just as if you were performing them Difficulty: 1 Preparations: You should have everything at level 7 by this point (magic-wise, anyway), and any weapons upgraded to the maximum level which is 6 now. Strategy: Attack them until they die - simple as that. No need to go into detail here. In fact, you can't consider them as bosses, but they are...nonetheless. Just remember that Shadow 1 (which is Randi) has the most HP. Have fun! ======================== 25. Aegagropilon (plant) ======================== Location: Tree Palace HP: 3016, MP: 99, EXP given: 11050, GP given: 1800, Prizes: Spear's Orb Weakness: None Attacks: Burst, Sleep Flower, Wall Difficulty: 6 Preparation: Aegagropilon is a pretty tough fight, so prepare wisely. If you haven't already, go buy the armor in Gold City - all of it. If you haven't already, go practice your weapons until they all reach level 6. If you haven't already, go practice your spells until they reach level 7....yes, even Luna. I would advise your characters' levels to be at somewhere around 42 or higher. Strategy: Aegagropilon is an annoyance for two reasons. One, he casts Wall, which reflects your magic back at you. Bad thing. Two, he casts Sleep Flower, which is self explanatory - only he does this quite often. Have Purim cast level 7 Remedy to wake up a sleeping character. Aegagropilon also has the Burst spell, which does some heavy damage. The boss will usually cast Wall right off the bat, so hold off any spells until he casts Wall. Then, have Popoi cast a Dispel Magic to get rid of it (it is very important that Shade be at least level 4 or higher, otherwise you CANNOT get rid of the wall - if your Shade magic is lower than 4, bump the difficulty to about 8 or 9.) Once the Wall is off, you're free to cast any spell that you wish...keep in mind that he can always recast Wall. Purim should be doing what she does best with her magic, level 7 Cure Water or actually, she can help out the rest of the team by giving them level 7 Moon Sabers, which will drain HP from the boss and give it to the attacker - giving your party a great way to heal themselves. Note that Moon Saber has the opposite effect on undead. =================== 26. Hydra (reptile) =================== Location: Underground City HP: 3382, MP: 99, EXP gained: 12439, GP gained: 3600, Prizes: Whip's Orb Weakness: Fire Attacks: Current, Cure Water, Acid Storm Difficulty: 4 Preparations: If you haven't already, go back to the Wind Palace and level Purim's and Popoi's Dryad magic to level 7. Wall might prove useful in the next couple of fights. Burst will prove even more useful. Also, get the spear to level 7, as it will be your strongest weapon right now. Strategy: Hydra's not too hard - he's just like Jabberwocky from the Water Palace, only Hydra tends to regenerate more often. Have Randi use a powerful weapon like the spear and nail him with a power attack. Since Hydra's Current attack won't be of much effect, you can have Purim assist Popoi in casting fire spells, if you'd like. Exploder, Lava Wave, Fireball, Fire Bouqouet and Blaze Wall are all excellent choices in what to shmack down Hydra with. :) ======================== 27. Kettle Kin (machine) ======================== Location: Underground City HP: 1230, MP: 33, EXP given: 15555, GP given: 3360, Prizes: Bow's Orb Weakness: None Attacks: Moogle Hammer, Lunar Boost, Lucid Barrier Difficulty: 4 Preparations: Not too many to make, only get your newest weapons that you got orbs for recently up to level 7. Your magic should all be level 7, and your levels should be somewhere around 48 or higher, depending on how long you fought around in the Underground City. Strategy: Kettle Kin is a relative to Kilroy. Nothing to worry about here, he has barely 1300 HP, which a couple of level 7 Burst spells can take off really quick. Lucid Barrier will prevent any physical damage from getting through, so you'd better stick to magic for this fight. ======================= 28. Snapdragon (reptile) ======================= Location: Tree Palace HP: 1215, MP: 6, EXP given: 19200, GP given: 12480, Prizes: Javelin's Orb Weakness: Fire Attacks: Tongue, Cure Water Difficulty: 7 Preparations: Again, make sure your magic is at level 7, and all weapons have been upgraded. Character levels should be somewhere around 50 or above. :) Strategy: Snapdragon resembles Biting Lizard, only this time he's green. But...don't underestimate him. The reason why the difficulty is at 7 is due to his tongue attack, when and if he swallows you, expect to take 400+ damage when he spits you back out. Youch! He also has level 5 Cure Water, too. Bad news for him, though...he's still weak against fire, so have Popoi bust out those level 7 fire spells and he'll be toast before long...literally. Purim needs to heal any damage from tongue attacks with level 7 Cure Water. ================ 29. Hexas (demon) ================ Location: Tree Palace HP: 3465, MP: 69, EXP given: 20103, GP given: 14400, Prizes: Whip's Orb Weakness: None Attacks: Midget attack, Dispel Magic, Freeze, Acid Storm, Gem Missile, Earth Slide Air Blast, Thunderbolt, Fireball, Lava Wave Difficulty: 6 Preparations: Again, all magic needs to be at level 7, and weapons should be upgraded. Your levels should be somewhere around 50+. Strategy: Hexas is one annoying boss. She likes to shrink people with her Midget attack so just counter that with the Midge Mallet. Also, Dispel Magic will be coming out like crazy in this fight, so don't even bother casting support spells. During the fight, pay attention to the color of her tail. Depending on the color, she will cast different spells. If it's blue, she will use Freeze or Acid Storm. Brown means you're gonna be assaulted with Gnome magic. Red means burnage is coming your way, by Lava Wave and or Fireball spells, and pink means she's using wind against ya. No matter what color she is, she has no weakness, so Popoi is again free to cast anything he wants...although level 7 Burst will basically own Hexas. Purim should heal when necessary and Randi should be attacking. Or, you could just be cheap and have Popoi cast Magic Absorb until she runs out of MP. Hehe - if you do that, bump the difficulty to about 2...lol! =========================== 30. Mech Rider #3 (machine) =========================== Location: Mana Fortress HP: 4327, MP: 38, EXP given: 21104, GP given: 16000, Prizes: Spear's Orb Weakness: None Attacks: Charge attack, Speed Up, Wall Difficulty: 5 Preparation: Again, all magic and weapons should be at level 7. Character levels should be at or above 52 by now. Strategy: I bet you're real sick and tired of seeing this guy, aren't you? Don't worry, as this is your last fight with him. Yes, he still has his level 5 Speed Up and his charge attacks, which can paralyze you. But he also has Wall, and you know what that means. Popoi has to cast Dispel Magic to get rid of it. Or, you could leave it on, then attack him. Every time you hit him physically, he will counter with level 5 Speed Up, and if his Wall is on, it will bounce onto one of your party members. You don't really need it, since Purim has level 7 Speed Up, but hey...it helps, right. So, after gettig rid of his Wall (or draining his MP), let loose with whatever spell you want...and keep attacking and the battle will be over in no time. ========================= 31. Dragon Worm (reptile) ========================= Location: The Pure Land HP: 3525, MP: 99, EXP given: 24290, GP given: 17460, Prizes: Bow's Orb Weakness: Wind Attacks: Balloon Ring, Earth Slide, Petrify Gas Difficulty: 6 Preparations: This is very important. Make sure that you revisit the Lost Continent after beating the Tree Palace. Walk around the palace to find Neko. He will sell you Vestguards, Gauntlets, and Needle Helms. This armor is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY for the trip through Pure Land - otherwise you WILL GET OWNED - SERIOUSLY! So, buy those armors before even thinking about going to Pure Land. And as before, magic needs to be at level 7, weapons need to be level 7 or 8 and character levels should be at or above 54. There are SIX bosses to defeat in the Pure Land, and this preparation applies to all of them. Good luck to you. ;) Strategy: Remember Great Viper from Matango? Well, this is basically who you're fighting, only beefier and with more attacks. Petrify Gas shouldn't harm you as long as you have that armor from Lost Continent on. Even his level 8 Earth Slide shouldn't harm you that much. Just like Great Viper, he's weak to wind magic, so concentrate Thunderbolts or Air Blasts on him, have Purim cast level 7 Cure Water when necessary and have Randi just attack and he will soon be a memory. ======================= 32. Snow Dragon (dragon) ======================= Location: The Pure Land HP: 2800, MP: 99, EXP given: 26588, GP given: 18360, Prizes: Axe's Orb Weakness: Fire Attacks: Balloon Ring, Freeze Breath, Freeze, Tail Swipe Difficulty: 7 Preparations: This is very important. Make sure that you revisit the Lost Continent after beating the Tree Palace. Walk around the palace to find Neko. He will sell you Vestguards, Gauntlets, and Needle Helms. This armor is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY for the trip through Pure Land - otherwise you WILL GET SLAUGHTERED BADLY! So, buy those armors before even thinking about going to Pure Land. And as before, magic needs to be at level 7, weapons need to be level 7 or 8 and character levels should be at or above 54. There are SIX bosses to defeat in the Pure Land, and this preparation applies to all of them. Good luck to you. ;) Strategy: This is one of three dragon bosses in Pure Land. These dragons like to blow breath at you (this particular ones does Freeze Breath like the Frost Gigas) and cast spells. They will also swipe you with their tails if you are near their spiky tails. Tail Swipes hurt, so stay away from them. This particular dragon doesn't like fire magic, so Popoi needs to be casting level 7 fire magic on this boss. Remember, Purim can also help out with fire spells as well, but she also needs to heal if anyone is low on HP. Also, the Dragon Spear (and any other dragon weapons) will deal good damage to dragons. =================== 33. Axe Beak (bird) =================== Location: Cave in the Pure Lands HP: 2800, MP: 99, EXP given: 27784, GP given: 20400, Prizes: Javelin's Orb Weakness: Water Attacks: Sonic Wave, Fireball, Lava Wave, Fire Bouquet Difficulty: 5 Preparations: This is very important. Good luck to you. ;) Strategy: Axe Beak is just like Spring Beak, only this guy is fire-based. Be prepared for some burnage in this battle. Popoi's elemental of choice here would be Undine, so he needs to chill out Axe by laying the smackdown on him with level 7 Freeze spells. Watch his hair movements - it determines what spells he will cast. Back and forth movements mean he casting either Fire Bouquet or Fireball, or if the hair stands on its end, you're about to eat a level 7 Lava Wave. As usual, Purim should be casting level 7 Cure Waters if anyone is injured. Not too hard. ====================== 34. Red Dragon (dragon) ====================== Location: Caves in the Pure Land HP: 3000, MP: 99, EXP Given: 29000, GP given: 21800, Prizes: Glove's Orb Weakness: Water Attacks: Fire Breath, Exploder, Tail Swipe Difficulty: 5 Preparations: This is very important. Good luck to you. ;) Strategy: This would be dragon number 2 on the list. Red Dragon has the opposite abilites of the Snow Dragon, so obviously you need to be casting water magic to beat him quickly. Fire breath will engulf a target, so be careful of that. Other than that, if you took out the Snow Dragon with no problems, this battle should be a piece of cake as well. ========================== 35. Thunder Gigas (spirit) ========================== Location: The Pure Land HP: 4462, MP: 99, EXP Given: 30277, GP Given: 30600, Prizes: Sword's Orb Weakness: Earth Attacks: Blitz Breath, Silence, Thunderbolt, Air Blast, Balloon, Analyzer, Thunder Saber Difficulty: 9 Preparations: This is very important. Good luck to you. ;) Strategy: Ok, of course you're not going to get off that easy through this place. Thunder Gigas will present some sort of challenge to you, that's for sure. Blitz Breath will definetly be your worst nightmare in this fight...this does over 400+ damage to a single character. Standing in front of him when he's materialized will cause him to slam the ground, resulting in you eating a level 7 Thunderbolt. Plus, he will try to silence you or cast Thunder Saber on you. Gnome gets to have his fun with this boss, however, so let Popoi cast level 7 Earth Slide often. Gem Missile works well too, it just doesn't as much damage as Earth Slide. Purim needs to be curing (or reviving dead characters) damage from any stray Blitz Breath attacks, and Randi needs to be attacking. ======================= 36. Blue Dragon (dragon) ======================= Location: Cliffs in the Pure Land HP: 3200, MP: 99, EXP given: 31570, GP given: 28560, Prizes: Boomerang's Orb Weakness: Earth Attacks: Blitz Breath, Thunderbolt, Tail Swipe Difficulty: 6 Preparations: This is very important. Good luck to you. ;) Strategy: This is the last dragon, and the last boss of Pure Land, thank goodness. Basically, this fight will be similar to fight with Thunder Gigas; you'll be up against Blitz Breath again, but this time it's weakened. Thunderbolts may also come flying your way, so watch for those. It's round 2 for Gnome, so Popoi needs to once again cast level 7 Earth Slide or Gem Missile to quickly put this boss away. Purim can heal if anyone gets low, and Randi needs to be attacking. ================== 37. Buffy (undead) ================== Location: Mana Fortress - section 1 HP: 4200, MP: 99, EXP given: 35686, GP given: 22200, Prizes: None Weakness: Light Attacks: Bite, Claw Swipe, Energy Absorb, Freeze, Dark Force, Dispel Magic, Sleep Ring Difficulty: 5 Preparations: You're nearing the final bosses of the game, so make sure that everything is at level 8. Lumina, Shade, and Dryad are your most important elements in the Mana Fortress, so they must be at level 8. Weapons need to be upgraded to level 8 also. Character levels should be no lower than 63. Strategy: It's Vampire again - only he's gold. He's just as easy, though...and guess what? You have light spells...level 8 light spells! Purim's the character of choice in this battle, so have her constantly cast level 8 Lucent Beams on the boss. Watch out for the boss's attacks and his spells. Popoi can help out Purim by casting any elemental magic, except Shade...preferably Dryad. ========================= 38. Dread Slime (morpher) ========================= Location: Mana Fortress - section 2 HP: 5000, MP: 99, EXP given: 37000, GP given: 26400, Prizes: None Weakness: Darkness Attacks: Acid Storm, but also can cast almost every spell in the game Difficulty: 8 Preparations: You're nearing the final bosses of the game, so make sure that everything is at level 8. Lumina, Shade, and Dryad are your most important elements in the Mana Fortress, so they must be at level 8. Weapons need to be upgraded to level 8 also. Character levels should be no lower than 63. Strategy: Other than the last two bosses, Dread Slime has the most HP in the game, which means this battle can take a while. There are some things to know about this boss. First off, his main attack is Acid Storm, which is no biggie. However, if Popoi casts a spell on him, Dread Slime will start to cast a spell of that same element. For example, if Popoi casts level 8 Freeze on Dread Slime, Dread Slime will start to cast Freeze as well. He will copy every single element except Luna magic and Shade magic, which he is weak against. Second, if Purim casts Wall on the party, Dread Slime's magic will be reflected back onto him for more damage. Unlike Lime Slime (which got smaller as it took more damage), Dread Slime actually gets larger as it takes damage, and soon enough, your characters will be stuck in one spot, making it impossible to attack it physically. Your primary choice of offense would be Popoi's level 8 Dark Force spell - it does heaps of damage to the boss. Randi is particularly useless throughout most of the battle, as the boss has high defense. Purim needs to be casting either level 8 Wall or Cure Water for defense. ============================ 39. The Dark Lich (Thanatos) ============================ Location: Mana Fortress - final section HP: 6666, MP: 99, EXP given: unknown, GP given: unknown, Prizes: Mana Magic Weakness: Light Attacks: Freeze Beam, Petrify Beam, Confuse Hoops, Leaden Glare, Hand Crush, Freeze, Energy Absorb, Earth Slide, Thunderbolt, Dark Force, Dispel Magic, Evil Gate and various other attacks. Difficulty: 9 Preparations: Characters need to be at least level 70 or higher. Lumina, Dryad and Undine should be level 8, if nothing else. All weapons should be at level 8. Strategy: The Dark Lich is Thanatos's true form. It has a variety of attacks as well as a heap load of spells to throw at you. When DL's full body is out, you can attack it physically in its chest - when only its hands and head are out, look out for Hand Crush (the hands start to glow and anyone caught in it will take a lot of damage plus become paralyzed. Once paralyzed, DL usually doesn't stop Hand Crush until the character is dead.) Although Popoi can use any elemental spell he wants (except for Shade), Purim's Lucent Beam spell is your primary choice of weapon here. Have her repeatedly cast Lucent Beam (along with Popoi's Burst spell, if you want) to cause major damage to DL. Randi should use full level 8 power attacks on the boss. Keep attacking and eventually you'll defeat him. Now it's time to face the Mana Beast! =========================== 40. The Mana Beast (dragon) =========================== Location: Outside of the Mana Fortress HP: 9999, MP: 99, EXP given: 0, GP given: 0, Prizes: Completion of Secret of Mana! Weakness: None Attacks: Swirling fire attack, Charging head-butt, Wall, Lucent Beam, Dispel Magic Difficulty: Can range from 2 to 10, depending on your overall status Preparation: Make sure that Dryad is at level 8, and that Randi's sword is at level 8. Also you might want to be a pretty high level for this last fight... Strategy: Ok, for this fight, I will provide two ways to beat him: The hard way, and the cheap easy way. The hard way can take as long as half an hour, the easy, cheap way can take two minutes. Here we go. ===================================== Fighting the Mana Beast the hard way: ===================================== The Mana Beast is the last boss of the game and it only has three basic attacks. First off, Randi is the ONLY person who can seriously damage the beast, so spells will be literally useless. Second, Randi needs to have the Dragon Buster (the level 8 sword) equipped. Third, at the beginning of the fight, use Purim and set up the following spells in this order: level 8 Defender, Lucid Barrier, and Lunar Boost (for extra damage). Then have her switch to Dryad and have her cast level 8 Mana Magic on Randi. As soon as you are done selecting that, switch to Popoi and have him cast level 8 Mana Magic on Randi. If you did this quick enough, both of them should be casting the spell at the same time, and as a result the Sword of Mana will be revived. By this time, the beast should be in the background of the screen, preparing its swirling fire attack. Now have Randi charge all the way up to level 8, but don't let go yet. If you have cast either Defender or Lucid Barrier, the swirling fire attack will do no damage, or very little damage to you. Next, the beast will perform its charging head butt attack. If the Lucid Barrier is still on, you will take no damage from that, either. Your sword should still be charged at level 8. Now, the beast will either appear from the top of the screen, or appear from the bottom of the screen - WAIT until his full body is in the screen, or better yet, wait until after he casts his level 8 Wall spell. Don't bother dispelling it, as it will just cast it again. Position Randi so that he is directly in front of the beast's chest, then let your power attack go. Charge up again to level 8, and while the beast is probably pounding you with level 8 Lucent Beams, have Purim cast level 8 Cure Water (DO NOT CAST WALL.) If you're lucky, you'll get two full power attacks in before the beast leaves the screen. Be prepared for a charging head butt from the side of the screen, though. You may take some damage from this depending if Defender hasn't worn off. As the beast flies back to the background of the screen, have Purim recast Defender and Lucid Barrier - and if Mana magic has faded, have both Purim and Popoi recast Mana Magic. Keep this up until he start to turn grey, which means he has been defeated. It's the long way, but it works. ==================================== Fighting the Mana Beast the easy way ==================================== The trick to beating the Mana Beast the cheap, easy way is in one spell: Moon Energy. If Randi's levels are high enough, casting Defender/Lucid Barrier at the start of the fight, shouldn't be necessary. You still need to have Purim and Popoi cast level 8 Mana Magic on Randi, though. When the beast is in the background of the screen, better yet, before his body fully shows up on screen, have Purim cast a level 8 Moon Energy on Randi. Now each hit you do should deal 999 damage to the Mana Beast. Don't bother charging up...just wait until 100% power and attack for 999 damage. Rinse and repeat. If you're fast enough, the Mana Beast will die in the first round of combat. :) ================ E.
