The Gontranno Sanctuary
by: The Button Man | November 30, 2002

[Jump to: The Gontranno Sanctuary | Anathema]

Rolling fields, the setting Mediterranean sun, ripening corn, ancient fortress-like churches, slow growing tomatoes the old fashioned way; a sense of peace and tranquillity that gives you a feeling that, at last, you really are at home. Thought the residents may not know it, Sicily is about to become the origin for a world encompassing trip of intrigue, assassination and skulduggery. Of course, it is the home of the Mafia, but there is one resident of this island who is far more dangerous. Welcome to the refuge of The Hitman, a.k.a. Tobias Rieper, a.k.a. 47.

Walkthrough

We start in 47's shed. All the way through this level, you will get regular text messages appearing at the bottom of the screen. Since most of these are not spoken, it is probably worth stopping what you are doing and reading them (especially for a new player). Start the game by walking to the door of the shed, and exiting. You will be greeted by the church priest, Father Vittorio, your mentor. Pay attention to what he says, and when the cut scene ends, he will walk off.

You now have your first opportunity to wonder round the grounds, and get used to your controls. For a new player, probably the most advisable thing to do would be to take the first part of the tutorial available. To do this, enter the door for the ruins, virtually opposite the entrance to the Shed, and follow the directions. When you have made it to the top, walk back down by the alternative route, and leave the ruins. You have covered the basic movement controls for the game.

By this point, you should have heard the bells of the church ringing. It's time for a very big confession. You need to head into the church, and for the benefit of new players, we'll take the long way round. Leave the ruins, and head south. You will see some winding stairs up to a gate. Go up these stairs and through the gate. Go through the entrance to the church (large doors on the right). The door directly opposite you is access for the priest into the confessional, so it's a no-go for you. Enter the door at the far North West (top left as you enter the lobby) to enter the base of one of the towers. Take the only other door in this room to get into the church.

After this, enter the confessional through the curtains, and watch the cut-scene. After this, the priest will leave, and shortly after, there will be a second cut-scene. When you regain control of 47, leave the church the same way you entered, and go directly across the courtyard to the box that has been left for you. After another brief cut scene, you should head back to the shed, and your transformation into 47 will be complete.

[Save Game]

At this point, you have as much time as you want before you have to take on your first mission. Diana will request that you go through some further basic training, and if you are a new player, this would be wise. Unfortunately, most of the training is relayed to you as text rather than voice over, so you will have to read everything that appears at the bottom of your screen. The text should remain visible until you have performed whatever action it requests.

The first thing you should do is have a go with the Ballers, either on the well bucket or the melons. Practice shooting, and get used to how your aim wonders from a distance, and with rapid fire. When you run out of ammo, head over to the weapons shed, and pick up everything that is available (there are also items hanging on the walls). You'll also get an idea for how long it takes to pick a lock.

Other than the general firearm controls tuition you will receive, there is also a section for close-kill training, and additional movement controls. Take a look at the area encompassing the scarecrow and the doves. You will want to practice with all of the available close combat tools (there are three) on the scarecrow before you go on any mission. This is especially true of the anaesthetic - holding down the fire button delivers more anaesthetic, resulting in longer periods unconscious. In this area, you will also be told about the sneak, lean and crouch commands, and their potential uses.

After you've done this, the tutorial is complete, and you are able to start your first mission. However, it might be advisable to have a good look round the church and its grounds before you do head off into combat. Don't worry if you don't, since you return here frequently, giving you a chance to test out new weapons acquired during missions. To start your first real mission, enter your shed, and activate the laptop sitting on the work bench.

Items Available For Collection

  • Ballers [In 47's Shed]
  • Kitchen Knife [In 47's Shed]
  • Fiber Wire [In Weapons Shed]
  • Anaesthetic [In Weapons Shed]

Points Of Interest

You might like to take careful note of the characters and items in the cut scenes. The information may become useful in a future mission.

Have a good look around. There's plenty to see, and just because an area appears empty and unimportant now doesn't mean that this will be the case later.
