Well the history of Catacomb! It all started in 1990, SoftDisk Employee John Carmack had just come out with his newest game. It was a port of an old Apple // Game called Catacomb. This PC Port first appeared in volume #50 of Big Blue Disk And on Verbatim PC Disk Down under. The game was a very addicting and involving Top-Down shooter/arcade game. This was the beginning of … a great Series. Later in 1991/92 came Catacomb 2. Basically an extension of Catacomb. More of the same but still good. 1992/3, the first texture mapping fps game is released. Catacomb 3d: A New Dimension is given birth. 1993, Catacomb 2 is renamed to The Catacomb in a weird move. Catacomb seems to rather be totally unknown from now on. 1993, Catacomb Abyss is released. This game achieves classic status and worldwide notoriety. This game is heavily distributed around the BBS systems. The game is worked on by totally new employees (Not the ex-ID team.) 1993, Both the Catacomb Armageddon and Apocalypse are released. These games do not fare well simply due to that they are just Abyss with new levels. For the most part everything is the same. 1993, Froggman is given rights to the last 2 games and publishes Curse of the Catacomb and Terror of the Catacomb. These are just duplicates of Armageddon and Apocalypse only little graphic changes. To this day is is funny because this series has never received much gratitude I’ve come across sites that review Catacomb 3d simply as “oh just another lame doom clone D:” well that shows their upmost ignorance, because if Catacomb 3d wasn’t here, all our precious dooms and quakes and half-lifes wouldn’t exist. Catacomb was a great series indeed!.
