I have posted a size restriction page for the forums, so that everyone will know what the size limitations are on posted pics, signatures and avatars. I will put up a link in the menu above, as well as in the usercp and posting pages at a later date.

Recently I have noticed several avatars and sigs that are not in compliance with the BCU size restrictions guidelines. The boards are currently set to allow a maximum of 130 X 130 on all avatars instead of 128 X 128. The size restrictions on signatures and images remain unchanged. Please check their sizes and modify them accordingly. Thanks.

You would be amazed how many people find that too small and go over it.Wink

For scale, my sig is: 800x279

yah, but somehow it is very strange having such large sigs that distract you from potentially interesting posts...

There also is an option in your profile for removing signatures (and avatars).

Right, the option is there to remove sigs and avatars from view.

I try to keep the size ample, due to the fact that fans of this genre like to have elaborate avatars, some that include fleet info, pics of ship, medals, etc.

I just think that 800x400 is a little large.

I mean, cut it down a little, I don't think it unreasonable to let 800x300 be the limit. It's not the width that's the main problem, but when the height of it takes up most of your screen, it's a little irritating.

Edit: I'm fully aware that my sig is over 300 high Wink

There's currently a character limit on signatures yes? 1200 characters max I believe. I think that does a good enough job restricting the size of the signatures currently. But it's obvious that some have managed a way around this limit. So far though, I've only personally seen 1 person's signature that some how defies the limit.

Well, you can link a massive images using way less than 1200 characters. A limit on the physical size of the image is what is needed.

Well, I say that so long as it doesn't go beyond 800x600, it shouldn't be a problem for most people. I mean, most of us here run a 1024x768 resolution or higher on our monitors. 800x300 would be a very odd size personally.

Well, put the user bars in 2 columns
Under that you can put your CA banner (it is a banner, right?) and under that you can put your text.

Though some people have some very interesting signatures, I agree on there being a size limit; not just for the number of characters, but on the actuall size of the image capacity. 800 for width is fine as is 300. But you have also take into consideration the people who still use 800x600 resolutions.

Well, I wouldn't want it to be too large. I think putting the userbars into two columns would be a good idea, and then make sure that my CA Banner is say, 640x480 in size, and then fit my two lines of text. That should be close to an 800x300 resolution.

Right, 800 pixels wide would be fine. Except 2 things.

1) Take into account people running on 800x600 or whatever. Shared computers such as the ones on my campus run at this (the older ones at least, the newer ones go higher).

2) You have to include the side bar with the avatars and infomation on it. That brings the total width of the page well above 800 if you have a picture that width.

In fact a third thing.

3) Some people still use 56k. When I use it at home (as opposed to my house in york with its spiff T1billion line) it takes ages to load an average BCU page. I'm waiting for ten minutes for an attachment image or a linked image to appear because people put some real random crap in their signatures.

And a forth point that I think needs to be taken into account

4) This is a forum where you post messages not show off your signatures. Out of the small boxed area you get as a post, bearly 5% goes on the message. Your avatar is enough to identify you, the signature is used to show what you're working on/interested in/want to say perminantly. I've been on plenty of forums where people are quite content with a sig the size of my current one.

You know, it's possible to restrict the size of the signature area through CSS.

But then everyone would complain it isn't compatible with <Insert Browser here> *Cough*Internet Explorer*Cough*.

Armandikov - It's not fair to punish everyone for a school's lack of resources, or the fact that not everyone is upgraded to a fast connection speed. I know that not everyone can afford it, but it's not fair to punish everyone else.

I would accept 800x300 as a good size for a signature. And what goes in a signature is a supplement to our avatars. The signatures help to further define ourselves.

The userbars I have in my signature, are all things that I like, or are things about me. Things that I couldn't fit into a 130x130 avatar. And the text statements further define me. It's not fair for you tot ell me, and others like me, that we should limit our signatures to something as small as yours.

Granted, I agree that Adonis' is an example of a signature too large, and needs to be dealt with. But, I frankly would like to keep my signature as is, other than having enough space, and enough characters, to add in my CA banner.
