Post Posted: 07-12-2006 03:52 PM Post subject: Hoax Virus Warning

Some people may get a message across along these lines:

---------------------------------------------
Emails with pictures of Osama Bin-Laden hanged are being sent and the moment that you open these emails your computer will crash and you will not be able to fix it!

If you get an email along the lines of "Osama Bin Laden Captured" or "Osama Hanged" don't open the attachment. This e-mail is being distributed through countries around the globe, but mainly in the US and Israel.

Be considerate & send this warning to whomever you know. PLEASE FORWARD THIS WARNING AMONG FRIENDS, FAMILY AND CONTACTS:

You should be alert for the next few days: Do not open any message with an attached filed called "Invitation" regardless of who sent it. It is a virus that opens an Olympic Torch which "burns" the whole hard disc C of your computer. This virus simply destroys the Zero Sector of the Hard Disc, where the vital information is kept.
----------------------------------------------

IMPORTANT (Note that this bit is NOT part of the example message above)

http://www.sophos.com/pressoffice/news/articles/2006/02/olympictorch.html

The whole thing is a hoax, be very careful what you send on to others in your inbox. You may also want to check out the other prevailent hoax letters going around recently. Some hoax letters may in fact be hosting adware, spyware or viruses themselves.
http://www.sophos.com/security/hoaxes/recent/

However, still be careful and make sure all your anti-virus software is up to date.

To finnish the line Tiqhud started: "... employed by anti virus company's." Razz

I mean, they are the innovative guys, who else is going to find the security flaws?

I believe that's what they do.

The one's who are sending out the fake spam chain mails are the ones that need to be hurt. There's an interesting one on the Sophos page that says "when this email has 500 addresses on it, email it to Imnotaspamserverhonest@hotmail.com and it will be used to make an online petition".

At least they can't get hold of my email address from the 'CC' section... or can they...

Just checked my last chain mail I recieved, yes they can. Forwarding it keeps a record of everyone who sent it, and who they sent it too... I'm going to go kill some people.

When I get a chain mail, I send the person who send it the same e-mail back with the message: "If you send me a similar e-mail again, then I'm afraid I will have to block you in the future."

It works.

That is absolutely brilliant!

You don't need to send it, just recieve it. Someone else just needs to forward it and your e-mail is still written on the thing forever. Unless someone was kind enough to BCC it instead. Which is unlikely, these people tend not to know what it means.
